Just as a point of interest as to how easy it can be to confuse things. Look at the names that pop up in this family when searching Joe Hines. I'm aware this fella is in Illinois but both Joseph L Hines and the name Dalton appear....no mwonder people get sidetracked.

Michael passed away on month day 1923, at age 72 at death place , Illinois. He was buried at burial place , Illinois. Documents of Michael Hines Michael hines Mike Hines in 1910 United States Federal Census Mike Hines was born circa 1850, at birth place . Mike married Elizabeth Hines . They had 7 children: Gertange M Hines , Joseph L Hines and 5 other children . Mike lived in 1910, at address , Illinois.
Any of the genealagists on here rolling up their sleeves on Hines?
It seems there is NO brother in Minot .........according to records anyway.
I know this is an ancient topic, and oft discussed, but it just seems to fizzle out when, unless I'm mistaken, it's a vital part of all of this.

TheJesse Evans mystery sure is fascinating and intriguing!! I'd love to know what became of him. I have heard that he was more than likely killed during the Texas Ranger shootout in 1879... one of the rangers was quoted as saying they shot "the leader of the gang between the eyes" and left him for the buzzards. Is there any record of Evans being captured, convicted, and in prison after this incident?

No proof of legitimacy in the brushy bill rabbit hole. Thank you to all those who put time and resource into the hunt. I too wanted a different history for that poor kid, but he was caught up in a world of corruption and unfortunately fell victim to the powers that be. I believe the account given by Chino Silva that Billy was killed by Pat Garrett, body cared for by his close friends, thus ending the manhunt instigated by Gov. Wallace and his agents. Underlying fact is that Wallace was instrumental in the defense of the North during the civil war, and infamous for being strict on upholding harsh reconstruction laws.

Clydec: I went through a few of my old files and found where on October 26, 1948, Joseph L. Hines was said to have made a sworn statement that J. Frank Dalton was the real Jesse W. James. It also states that Joseph Hines name was Jesse R. James, cousin of Jesse W. James. I don't know how true all this is. There was another sworn statement in Escambia County, Florida the same County as the above statement, made on the same day, October 26, 1948, by Eliza, Jon and William E. Thompson that they were convinced that J. Frank Dalton was Jesse W. James. I have always thought that Morrison knew J. Frank Dalton and this is how he came to find Joseph Hines and Brushy Billy Roberts. I think it all ties in to the Brushy Story. TTT and Manhunter may know a lot more about all this. nmjames Curious about these affidavits. Any idea who the attorney was?
