I totally agree. Furthermore this dont match very well with the outlandish theory that Brushy was just fabricating a story he was Billy the kid. Sometimes its right there for the taking but some people choose to not see the simple facts for what they are. Brushy told his story for a reason that is very simple. He wanted to tell the truth about his life, which would be the normal thing to do we should recognize. There is no other credible explanation. Some might say that Brushy Bill (Oliver P Roberts) led a very uneventful life as a farmer, laborer, and rodeo rider. After becoming acquainted with J Frank Dalton, he saw the frenzied attention of the media after Dalton claimed he was Jesse James. Brushy decided to become Billy the Kid, and told an incredible story of unbelievable adventures. Information about events in the Lincoln County war had been published in 1926, “The Saga of Billy the Kid”. Brushy created an imaginary family that included names from his real family. Father: Imaginary - J H “Wild HENRY” Roberts Real -HENRY Oliver Roberts Mother Imaginary - Mary Adeline DUNN Real - Sarah ELIZABETH FERGUSON Father’s other wife: Imaginary - ELIZABETH FERGUSON Real - Caroline DUNN (mother of Martha Heath) Relative: Imaginary cousin - MARTHA HEATH Real half-sister - MARTHA Vada Roberts HEATH
The Saga of Billy the kid was also serialized in brushy's local rag. Readily available to the old fraudster.

So not only was Brushy creative (could come up with off shoots and alias and fantastic stories) but his memory and recollection of most of the Lincoln war, hideouts, etc was more accurate than not. He got that all from reading books? So I would add to his resume then that he was a "talented actor" as well. So I pose this question, if he wasn't BTK, what was his motive for saying so, fame? That's a pretty risky undertaking considering the times and why not try and pull the ruse earlier before his health began to fail?

J Frank Dalton, after about 67 years in hiding, came out as Jesse Woodson James 22 May 1948 in Lawton, Oklahoma.
Brushy Bill, after about 68 years in hiding, came out as Billy the Kid June 1949 in Hico, Texas.
Remarkable!

It appears Brushy Bill Robert's Legacy isn't him possibly being Billy the kid. His real Legacy is his involvement in the hugely eventful 1910 census records.

Right, but what is the motive behind their "confessions", a little taste of notriety before the pine box?

Yes it is remarkable. But what I find even more remarkable is that Brushy spent 23 years repeatedly reading The Saga of Billy The Kid to memorise it's content. However it's not his memory of the books content that's remarkable but the fact that he is probably the only person to ever read that book more than once.

He also somehow miraculously managed to fill in the gaps and correct the parts where Saga got things wrong. Thats not bad for an illiterate old peasant.
