In the book “The Life and Adventures of Nat Love”, Nat Love was also known as “Deadwood Dick.” This man met and spoken with Billy the Kid and other outlaws, he had a very adventurous and interesting life. Nat had several chance meetings with Billy and had some interesting things to say about them. Billy’s name is spelled “Billie” also which is interesting. Nat first met Billy in a saloon in Anton Chico when Billy asked him to have a drink with him. After that meeting Nat had other encounters with Billy. I won’t go into the whole detailed story, but one interesting story; Nat was riding from Holbrook Arizona to Silver Springs along with the Kid and two other men in the fall of 1880, and along the way Billy showed Nat a log cabin where he said he was born, Billy pointed out where the bed, table and stove had sat, and the post office where he frequented. Billy told Nat he was born and raised in Silver City, New Mexico which is near the Moggocilion Mountains. (maybe Mogollon Mountains?) Also interestingly Nat ran into Billy again in the spring of 1881 in Elmorgo NM, (that may have been Alamogordo, or El Morro?) Billy had to flee to the mountains to escape capture and Nat saw him behind the rocks heavily armed with two Winchesters and two 45 Colt revolvers and plenty of ammo, and no one dared to go up after him, he also spoke with him one other time in June in Anton Chico, and the last time he saw Billy he was dead and he saw his body in Fort Sumner.
I’m wondering why Billy would tell Nat Love that he was born in Silver City and not New York or Buffalo Gap or even Missouri as he told the census taker close to that time? If he purposely lied to Nat about his birthplace then maybe he also lied to someone else before about being born in New York, and also purposely lied to the census taker? Maybe Billy didn’t know where he was really born at the time, or maybe he just didn’t want anyone to know the truth of his birthplace to protect his reputation from his family. I’m just wondering what the explanation could be? Also going by Nat Love’s story Billy had two Winchester rifles and two Colt 45’s in the spring before Garrett’s encounter in Fort Sumner, and he was 22 yrs old.

I haven't time to check but was Nat Love one of those known to have seen the body? Does he appear on any of the lists of supposed viewers? Interesting either way. He plainly rode in very similar circles to BTK judging by the regularity of their meetings.

I haven't time to check but was Nat Love one of those known to have seen the body? Does he appear on any of the lists of supposed viewers? Interesting either way. He plainly rode in very similar circles to BTK judging by the regularity of their meetings. Nat worked as cowboy moving large herds of cattle on long drives and worked in New Mexico, and also for a cattle a boss in Arizona, and the Texas Panhandle, and even moved livestock from Mexico, he camped a lot, and visited saloons in the towns he came to, so his chances of running into Billy was fairly good, like Billy; Nat Love had a good share of adventure, he was wounded, shot a couple times and lived, fought with American Indians and was kidnapped by some once and got away, he was also a good shot, it’s a good read. Nat Love said he saw Billy laying dead at Pete Maxwell’s ranch, his group arrived in Lincoln County the very night Billy was killed, and went into camp a short distance from Maxwell’s and he saw the Kid a short time after he had been killed. So it sounds like possibly Nat wasn’t actually in Fort Sumner, but camped a short distance from there when it happened? Texas Truth Teller posted a good link on the board of a list of people in Fort Sumner that saw the body. I don’t see the name Nat Love or Deadwood Dick listed on that link. I don’t know if there is another list or not where his name may be included, here is that link emerituscollege.asu.edu/sites/default/files/ecdw/EVoice22/stahl22.html

Thanks for that, I knew there was a list on here somewhere but was in a rush yesterday. Looks like Mr Love needs adding to that list!

I have no idea...merely commenting on the recent info.
How do we know where he was? That's not inflammatory, just an inquiry as to how do we know where Mr Love was or wasn't.
Is he known as uncredible? If he is, that obviously puts a different slant on his musings.

I haven't read Mr love's book but I've seen plenty of reviews and the general consensus is that his autobiography has a few added ingredients to spice it up a little.

I’m confused? What part of his book did he supposedly lie about? Working as a cowboy, or meeting Billy the Kid, working with the railroad, or fighting with the natives, or his shooting ability, which part?, because it didn’t strike me reading it that any of his story could be impossible, I didn’t fact check things he said. I don’t know if it’s possible to fact check his stories? Some of his adventures can be a little bit extravagant but how could anyone know for sure they didn’t happen? There was a movie that came out based on Nat Love’s life, I haven’t seen the movie, so I don’t know how factual it is based on his accounts, since a lot of movies tend to add things and embellish things when it’s based on a historical person like the many Billy the Kid movies have, maybe the movie could have swayed the thoughts of some reviews of Nat Love’s book, I don’t know?

Dont get bothered by what he says It’s funny really - I would’ve thought any pro-Billy dying in 1881 would’ve been happier or more open to finding another alleged witness to Billy’s dead body to bolster that case.

Independent people's book reviews are their own perogative and if they state discrepancies then so be it. As for one book I'm sure you know that the most leading authority on the history and life of BTK and the LCW a certain Mr Nolan left no stone unturned..
