There's no question that Billy was up against the Lodge. The upstairs of the Murphy Dolan building even served as the meeting place for Masonic Lodge meetings at the time of the Lincoln County War. Who know's what this means, or what information could come from it - but probably something. The members of the House Ring wanted to become Masons because Catholics are not elible to become Masons. Their fraternal organization is the Knights of Columbus. J.J. Dolan became a Protestant so that he would be able to become a Mason. He changed back not long before he died. But Mexicans could not join in on Masonic meetings held in the Lincoln County Courthouse upstairs rooms. This was a way to separate the Whites from the Hispanics in town.

I doubt very much that Billy was Catholic. My McCarty clan are Presbyterians and have been for a very long time. My great grandfather, Eli McCarty memorized Genesis and I had a homemade record of him reciting that Bibical Book. My dad told me that becoming a Mason required a lot of memorization. I doubt Billy wanted to make the effort. Maybe if he had gotten older. He died young of course.
