Question... Was there an account of the killing of Jim Carlyle in any book written during Brushy's lifetime?

The reason I ask is it seems to me this is a very good piece of evidence that Brushy was the kid. Brushy's account of the killing, what was said at the event and that he wrote Gov Wallace about the killing after seeing himself accused of the killing in a Las Vegas newspaper. The letter exists and relates the same account nearly word for word. As I understand it, the letters werent well known until after Brushy died. Discovered here in Indiana.

Great question! There may have been books written about the killing of Jim Carlyle but maybe not about the letter he wrote to Governor Wallace? I will try and find out just when that letter was discovered and then it would be easier to look at the publishing dates of any books? I remember reading about that letter but I don’t know if it was from a recent source or an older book? It could be that some of those letters to Gov. Wallace were discovered from his estate later? It would definitely be interesting to find out more about when that one was discovered and if it was revealed before 1949 or when Brushy revealed he was Billy the Kid.

I found this info, it states that the Kid writes to the Governor about the accusations of Carlyle in the Las Vegas Gazette on Dec 12, 1880. I don’t know if the Las Vegas Gazette printed his letter or what involvement the paper was with it? I will try and pull up Las Vegas Gazette on that date to see if that letter from Billy was published in it? www.aboutbillythekid.com/letters.htm

You can find the story of the killing of Jim Carlyle in the 1926 book The Saga of Billy the Kid by Walter Noble Burns. (Pages 201 - 205, chapter XV - At Bay) You can also find the story in the Fort Worth Star Telegram, August 29, 1926, Sun - Page 47.
I hope this helps.

The thing is that Brushys account matches the letter 100%. The Burns account leaves out key things. For one, Brushy said he told Carlyle without a warrant it amounted to mob violence, the kids letter said same exact thing. My understanding is those letters werent known until late 50s, early 60s. Unless Brushy saw that letter, this is a win for him in my opinion.

Do you have a copy of the letter? If not, can you get a copy of the letter. Not a typed copy, the handwritten letter. If you can, look at it and then find some letters written by Brushy and see if the handwriting matches.
Let me know what you find after looking at the letters.
Thanks nmjames
