At first glance believing that your favorite notorious felon managed to survive his/death may seem sketchy. But when you look at the big picture your hope becomes more plausible.
Three ifs and a maybe. If Brushy is Billy the kid, if his dad road with Quantrill then he knew Jessie James very well. I would describe their relation as similar to uncle/nephew. If so, then seeing your nephew survive his death might lead you to a plan.
For every frontier outlaw their were five immitations and 200 wantabe heros. Wanting the glory of killing the bad man. It may be more of a miracle that the right outlaw ever got killed.
