When it comes to how well Pat knew Billy. At a time when Billy's life depended on peeps underestimating him Pat knew Billy well enough to warn peeps not to underestimate Billy. That indicates that he had personal intimate knowledge of Billy's special talents. It is an old west trope that gun men who survived had an edge. Being underestimated was one of the kid's advantages. Me thinks.

I agree, I too believe Billy was often underestimated because he looked young and wasn’t rough looking, other gun men and cowboys didn’t realize he was such a good shot. Billy used his youthful appearance to his advantage. Without hearing of his reputation other gun men couldn’t know that Billy practiced shooting on and off his horse continually and was extremely skilled, only men that were around him or heard of his reputation of his shooting skill would know that knowledge. Pat Garrett obviously was aware of Billy’s quick draw and shooting accuracy it may have been because Pat was well acquainted with him and saw him in action maybe practicing and knew the best way to take Billy down would be an ambush style.
