Here are some period Billy the Kid newspaper articles I've found, which should be of interest to the group (regardless of one's opinion on Brushy):
Great long article from August 6, 1881 -- shortly after Billy was supposedly killed. Note the speculation that he was alleged to have been from Sherman, TX (amongst other places). Also, see the speculation on his real name -- they finally settle on "Billy McCarthy" from New York:
chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn99021999/1881-08-06/ed-1/seq-3/;words=kid+BILLY+Kid+Billy+KID?date1=1836&sort=relevance&rows=20&searchType=basic&state=&date2=1922&proxtext=billy+the+kid&y=0&x=0&dateFilterType=yearRange&page=2&index=4
Now, see this from July 23, 1881 -- a short article that disputes or at least adds a new twist to the New York McCarthy theory:
chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn85058130/1881-07-23/ed-1/seq-7/;words=Billy+Kid?date1=1836&rows=20&searchType=basic&state=&date2=1922&proxtext=billy+the+kid&y=0&x=0&dateFilterType=yearRange&index=15
This one, from 1915, seems to be referencing McKinney's newly revised version of events:
chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn87062055/1915-08-13/ed-1/seq-2/;words=Billy+Kid?date1=1836&sort=relevance&rows=20&searchType=basic&state=&date2=1922&proxtext=billy+the+kid&y=0&x=0&dateFilterType=yearRange&page=2&index=7
And you've got to read this article, from an interview with Gov. Lew Wallace in 1902. Note the description of Billy's "steel gray" eyes. And his version of Billy's death has Garrett basically kidnapping both Pete and Paulita Maxwell, and Billy firing and missing at the same time that Garrett shoots:
chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn87062245/1902-09-21/ed-1/seq-17/;words=Billy+Kid?date1=1836&rows=20&searchType=basic&state=&date2=1922&proxtext=billy+the+kid&y=0&x=0&dateFilterType=yearRange&index=0
