Today July 14, 2022 is the 141 year anniversary of the shooting in Fort Sumner. And after all this time we are still baffled at the mystery of what exactly happened that night and how it happened and who it happened to? And we really don’t know for sure where Billy the Kid is laid to rest. There was too many conflicting accounts of the shooting back in the day to rely on one account. There’s a lot of questions. Was it really Billy the Kid, or Billy Barlow? Was he really armed? How many shots? And now I question where was the wake? Recently I stumbled across an auction of some of Paca Anaya documents, his book I buried Billy, and a tintype of Anaya taken in 1883 the items were acquired from his son in 1989 and went up for auction in 2017. In that lot was a very short handwritten letter from a family member of Jesus Silva’s dated 1977 it contained a couple bits of information such as where the wake took place, it brought up more questions for me, the wake was at the home of Jesus Silva. Wasn’t there accounts that the wake was in a carpenter shed? Maybe I was confused? or maybe he was moved from there to the residence of Jesus Silva at some point? One day I hope all the questions could be answered.
