Anybody read it? I found a copy in antique store for $60. In excellent shape. Seems to be quite rare. I don't know anything about the author, Philip Rasch Philip J. Rasch (1909-1995), WIKI article here. He was one of the best Billy the Kid researchers of the early years. His three main books were - 1) Trailing Billy the Kid. 2) Gunsmoke In Lincoln County. 3) Warriors of Lincoln County. Further info here about Rasch's books. These three books about Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County War were compiled from various articles that Rasch had published over the many decades when he was researching BtK. After Rasch passed in 1995, the Outlaw-Lawmen group, under the editing of Robert K. DeArment (1925-2021), organized these books and they were issued in limited editions. Most are now in the $25 to $75 price range. You might want to see if your local library can get these books for you via Inter-library loan.

One of the things that I would like to know is why did Ira Leonard abandonned the Kid the moment he was needed the most. At first he was much motivated of taking Judge Bristol s place. And he wrote letters to the lazy governor telling him that prosecutor Rynerson and Bristol favored the Dolan faction, all that Rynerson wanted to do is prosecute the Kid and did not care much about the other outlaws. Why did he not try to finish what he started? ( Leonard)

So --who won the LCW ?? In 1880 Chisom and BTK were still in the cattle business...Dolan was bankrupt before the war was over -the House was sold to the County.. the Seven Rivers gang couldn't steal enough Chisom cattle before the war to fill the House cattle contracts and supply came to an abrupt halt as the war ignited and Chisom diverted his cattle away from Lincoln . Only the Chisom brothers and regulators were still operative in 1880..meanwhile Pat Garrett is working both sides of Beaver Smith's Saloon -telling tall stories about his qualifications for advancemwnt to anyone who would listen....John Chisom did and got Pat elected Sherriff by stacking the Lincoln ballot withe cowboys --sounds familiar even today.

Thomas Benton Catron and Stephen B. Elkins were some that were involved in the Lincoln County War. Check Fred Nolan's book about the LCW.

The Santa Fe Ring did back off after the LCW....just as they were forced to in Colfax County when up against Clay Allison -who like the Regulators- took violence to a whole new level...simularly when they tried their old land grab swindle on Oliver Lee -the Ring lost their Prosecutor and Pat Garrett was forced to retreat after Pat's usual ambush technique failed and a Deputy killed. After the LCW the Ring even stopped harrassing Chisom with legal action and also put their faith in Pat Garrett to stop BTK and provided Poe to protect the cattlemen of the Canadian River. The Santa Fe Ring was not amused when Pat Garrett defrauded and perverted the course of Justice just as they had always done ....once Pat fell from grace -as he always seemed to do -the conspiracy against him was so great that it crossed Party lines as on a much higher level with JFK .

I don't think the Santa Fe Ring were ever interested in Lincoln County...the big land titles were in Colfax.. Chisum was only an occupier of public land - his wealth was in vast herds (including 10000 sheep). When Chisum sold his operation - he got more for his stock than Lucien Maxwell got for a million acres of land . No wonder John Chisum was extremely sensitive to rustling - whether by agents of the House or BTK...perhaps one reason rustling suddenly ceased around Seven Rivers in 1878 - Clay Allison ranched there briefly at that time....

I read later from Gale Cooper that there was an attempt on his life( probably Dolan),he quit and left fearing for is life My understanding is that Fountain was part of the Santa Fe ring trying to steal land from ranchers like Oliver Lee .... Democrats were getting stronger and had the legal services of Albert Fall. After Fountain, his son,his horse and arrest warrants disappeared near White Sands - the Ring and Republicans gave Pat Garrett an opportunity to resolve the murders...and revive his fortunes as a Sherriff once again. Nothing went right for Pat as he was up against powerful opponents who conspired against him -eventually leading to Pat's own despicable murder.

It was published after Rasch had passed.
