Doing the whole reverse engineering angle again, who was John Miller really? I'm convinced he IS involved somewhere in the story, right in the thick of it, somehow. Not getting bogged down in if he was or ever claimed to be Billy...
...pre 1881, who was John Miller.........?

Missy made a pretty good post on this some weeks ago that Miller may have been a man from the mountain states, who left his family behind, and reinvented himself as John Miller.

This was Missy's post:
*******************************
I found a reference of a man named William (Julianβ) Miller that had disappeared from his family and no one has ever seen him since according to his son Abran Miller taken in an interview by Edith Crawford in 1938 the interview is interesting how Abran met Billy the Kid, but what is odd is what he said about his father, after giving him a Black Stallion and handing over his blacksmith shop he simply walked away never to be seen again, this man had five children. I thought it maybe possible he could have some connection to Billy Barlow or John Miller? I know itβs a stretch but it maybe possible he changed his name and started a new life as John Miller?
The interview of Abran Miller starts in the middle of page 24,

One thing that strikes me in that interview is the vagueness of birthdates.
There's often chat that John Miller had worked for John Chisum, I wonder if there's records anywhere of who was actually in Chisum's employ in the late 1870s. William Julian Miller leaving his family ties in datewise too.

That's an interesting question. I'd love to know, also, if a record exists of Susan Barbara McSween's employees were before she sold her brand. Probably not but it's worth looking into.

Chain of custody is our best bet. From X to Y to Z. From then to the present time. When it comes to Chisum, I would suspect that you would have to look at his next of kin. When it comes to McSween, we would have to look at Monroe Harper and see if his descendants would have that information or if later on they sold assets to someone else.

www.findagrave.com/memorial/178859950/monroe-harperMonroe Harper's Find A Grave page. It mentions him owning land in El Paso and having property in Roswell New Mexico, and owning several mines. This reminds me of the genealogy of Henry Oliver Roberts where his stepfather Matthew Birdwell also owned mines and had interest in New Mexico and Arizona. I wonder if the two men had a connection.
