Hi, I believe it's the Gale Cooper book that throws up the Bille Kid letter. May be wrong of course.

You are correct, I have the book in front of me. The letter is signed Billie and not Billy or Billie the Kid. I would recommend the book but I don't agree with her finding. (Long Story) The words from Wm. Bonney was his own words from the real Wm. H. Bonney.

Just an observation. I think the important point here is that William H. Bonney spelled his nickname as "Billie" and not "Billy". And Brushy spelled it the same way. Whether or not he liked adding "kid" or "the kid" to it in 1880 doesn't mean he wouldn't do that in 1949 when the whole world knew him as "Billy The Kid".
