First post here but I have stopped by to read threads here often. I am a history guy in general, but especially love the civil war and the era from 1865 to about 1915 which encompasses the "Old West". I have ready many, many books about the Kid and everything on Brushy I can find. Not sure about Brushy's claim to be the Kid but I have to admit he knew lots of interesting stuff and had to at least been around someone with intimate knowledge of LCW. I am especially interested in Jessie Evans' exploits and find him to maybe the most enigmatic character in Western history. I often wonder what happened to him after escaping at Huntsville. Look forward to some banter.

Welcome to the board grayghost, I agree Jesse Evans was quite enigmatic, I wish more research was done of him, sadly not really a whole lot was written about him, there's more theories than facts it seems, I wonder if Jesse Evans was ever in prison together with John Wesley Hardin? Looking forward to your thoughts about Jesse and others.

I believe Jessie was in prison at Huntsville at the same time as John Wesley Hardin was (at least until he escaped in 1882 I believe). I know JWH also attempted to escape Huntsville a few times but was unsuccessful. Jessie had made a career of such escapes though, something he shared in common with the Kid. I also read somewhere that John Wesley Hardin was in jail with Johnny Ringo while Hardin was awaiting trial that eventually sent him to prison. Ringo was being held for his participation in the Mason County/Hoodoo war.

grayghost, there's a story of John Wesley Hardin, and he's around 17 yrs old I believe when arrested in Longview?, he was charged with murder and stealing a horse, anyway a cellmate had smuggled a gun in the jail, Hardin wound up with the gun, i believe he traded his coat for it?, and when he was taken to Waco for trial during the trip JWH managed to shoot one of the two men transporting him, and rode off on his horse, I wonder who that cellmate was that smuggled the gun?
