Hey everyone,
I am new on here and wanted to talk about who the true BTK was. I want to believe Billy was not killed, and survived, i am a huge history buff that feels BTK was forced into this lifestyle and that his life may have been spared by GOD, but who knows...
One major thing that boggles me, why does the state of NM not want his body exumed and tested to see if its really him burried there?
To me, because we all know that Pat was not always a law man and the state police do wear his picture on their sleeves as respect for Pat, but I feel as if they aren't 100% sure it was really BTK he shot or someone else.

Welcome to the board. I'm sure you'll get more precise answers than mine, but the short of it is: One, there is absolutely no way to be certain who is buried in the supposed grave because of floods that washed out the cemetery. Second, and probably most important reason is tourism. The state has absolutely nothing to gain but everything to lose from a financial perspective if it was proven that BTK did in fact survive and that he was not buried there. Oh, I suppose people would still go there and spend money. Just because BTK would not have died as the history says doesn't mean all the other events, Lincoln County War, Garret and the kid at Fort Sumner, Stinking Springs, etc., have no significance or interest. In fact, now that I think about it, perhaps it wouldn't hurt them financially at all or very much. But the state probably doesn't see it that way. Plus, I believe the powers that be really do believe he's dead and that no credible evidence proves otherwise. They certainly don't believe Brushy's story.

This is the first I here of NM State Police wearing the image of Pat Garrett on their sleeve. If true, I'm shocked. From all I've read he was a rustler, a liar, and a drunkard before he became sheriff of Lincoln County. After he was no longer sheriff he was still a liar and a drunkard. Why anyone would want to honor such a disreputable character mystifies me.
