In the Hico Museum. I have another copy of one I bought long ago that I never see anywhere. I will post soon. It's not much different from one of the others. Thanks Clyde. I enjoy being credited for what little I do. The lady I tracked down had 30-40 Brushy handwritten letters plus photos that she could not find and she says she must have thrown them away after 60 years of 'nobody caring'. Nmjames is gonna help find the copies.

"DENVER (Reuters) - The only authenticated photograph of infamous Wild West gunslinger Billy the Kid was auctioned off to Florida billionaire William Koch for an $2.3 million on Saturday night.
Koch, an energy company executive and well-known collector of art and American West artifacts, placed the winning bid in person before stunned onlookers at Brian Lebel’s annual Old West Auction in Denver.

Lebel said at an auction preview that he expected the tintype image to sell for between $300,000 and $400,000.

Koch told Reuters after the auction that he plans to allow some small museums to display the piece, and after that he will “just enjoy” the iconic piece.

“I love the old West,” he said. “This is a part of American history.”

The metallic photo, taken outside a Fort Sumner, New Mexico, saloon in late 1879 or early 1880, depicts the outlaw gripping the upright barrel of a Winchester carbine, with a Colt 45 pistol strapped to his hip.

The photograph was owned by the descendants of Dan Dedrick, who was given the photo by his cattle rustling partner, Billy the Kid himself.

Born Henry McCarty, but known in New Mexico as William Bonney, the Kid was shot dead at age 22 by lawman Pat Garrett in 1881, months after a jailbreak in which Bonney reportedly killed two deputies.

In the 130 years since his death, Billy the Kid has been depicted, with varying degrees of accuracy, in scores of popular culture movies and books.

Koch’s winning bid was actually $2 million, but a $300,000 “buyer’s premium” was tacked on, bringing the total selling price to $2.3 million, an auction spokeswoman said.

Brian Lebel said he was pleased that the photo wasn’t sold to an overseas buyer.

“I‘m happy that it will stay in this country and will be shared with the public,” he said.

Koch is one of the sons of Fred C. Koch, founder of Wichita, Kansas-based energy conglomerate Koch Industries, one of the largest private companies in the United States."

There are now two with the croquet photo and now maybe three with the Frank Abrams photo.

The authenticated photograph of Billy the Kid belonged to Daniel C. Dedrick (Dietrich) from about 1880 until 1938. Daniel Dedrick, who kept the mail station, was a resident of Lincoln County in 1880. William Bonny and his neighbor, Charles Bowdre, were residents of San Miguel County. Both worked in cattle. Daniel Dedrick left New Mexico, and was a placer miner in Trinity County, California, by 1900. He remained in Trinity County until his death 25 April 1938. He is buried in the Weaverville Cemetery, Weaverville, Trinity County, California. Before his death, he gave photographs to his nephew, Frank L. Upham, including the photograph of Billy the Kid. Frank’s mother was Malinda Dietrich, Daniel’s younger sister. About 1947, Frank gave the photographs to his sister-in-law, Elizabeth, who kept them for almost 40 years. The photos were loaned to the Lincoln County Trust in the mid 1980s, and later reclaimed by the family. William Koch both the photograph at auction 25 June 2011.

In the interesting new photo of Brushy on the far right, he has a gun in his pocket, I can’t make out much detail of it when I try to enlarge it. Someone else may can? I wonder if it could be an older make or type of one the Kid was known to carry?

Also Brushy is posing with a gun and a rifle in the photo on the left, those photos were posted some time ago, so if the guns in Brushy’s photos have been discussed before on another thread I apologize.

Looks like a Winchester 1873 carbine with a 20 inch barrel in that photo. It would be interesting to know more about that rifle, year of manufacture etc.
