I just finished reading Jesse Evans A Texas Hide-Burner by Ed Bartholomew. At the end of the book there is a picture of 9 men. It lists fifth from the left, Billy the Kid, with fiddle and Jesse Evans, second from the right. I wonder where the original picture is held or where one could see a better print. The print of the picture in the book is not too clear. It is the first time I had read that Billy liked to play the fiddle. Is this true? Also, the book states that Jesse Evans walked away from his work detail and disappeared, but a lot of people did that and were not pursued as the prison system did not have adequate money back then. The prisoners were leased to contractors as the prison did not have enough money to feed or cloth them. The working conditions were terrible with some prisoners not even having shoes or clothing to keep them warm in the winter. I liked the book as Mr. Bartholomew did not put his spin on the story or really state an opinion. He simply presented his gathered facts.

Susan, Thank You for the info about the book, I will put it on my list of to buy and read for sure. The photo of Billy playing the fiddle If it's the same photo?, I believe it has been posted before on the board awhile back by Wayne Land, I searched to find you a quick link to that thread about it. brushybill.proboards.com/thread/157/billy-kid-fiddle-player I don't remember reading anything about Billy ever playing the fiddle but I do remember reading about one or both of the Coe's that did, it may have been in the book A Frontier Fighter, not sure? Billy did stay with the Coe's or one of the Coe's during a winter and he could have learned how to play it from them or one of them?, it's just a guess?

Yes, that is the one. Do you think that picture is authentic?

It may really be Billy?, but the descriptions of Jesse Evans don't match the one standing next to Billy in the photo that's supposed to be Jesse, according to descriptions written about him he was small in stature like Billy, & close to the same age, to me the Jesse in the photo looks bigger, taller and older than Billy, but the written descriptions of Jesse Evans could be wrong or exaggerated? I was reading in The Lost Interviews and Brushy claimed he tried to spring Jesse Evans from jail in Fort Stockton Texas one time after the killing of Chapman, so was Jesse Evans arrested more than once in Texas?, it would explain the different scenarios of how he left prison, maybe Fort Stockton was where he jumped the wall? and then was arrested again later and walked away from his job duties from that prison? I wonder really how many times Jesse Evans was arrested in Texas?

I liked the book as Mr. Bartholomew did not put his spin on the story or really state an opinion. He simply presented his gathered facts. In the post above a question was asked if it could be true that Billy liked to play the fiddle? I ran across something mentioned in Severo Gallegos interview about Billy playing a guitar while in jail, from the interview.. “In jail he thought … and there are those remember his uncanny calmness as he would strum the guitar … sing … and act as he always had. In time though his plans for escape were completed … the plans which had been on his mind constantly … the time came to execute them.” Although it’s not a fiddle, but it may be that Billy could play more than one instrument? I also found a reference of a Guitar Fiddle or Troubadour Fiddle, here’s a little about it.. The Guitar Fiddle or Troubadour Fiddle is a modern name bestowed retroactively upon certain precursors of the violin possessing characteristics of both guitar and fiddle. So maybe Billy had a kind a Troubadour fiddle that may have also been called a guitar?, but since the instruments are played differently, I don’t really know if a person really would call a guitar a fiddle though?

As I have understood no photos exist that is confirmed 100 percent to depict Jesse Evans. However I do find it interesting that all these four alleged photos of Jesse appears to depict the same individual?
