Good questions, Susan First, some believe that evidence shows Patrick McCarty and Catherine Devine were the parents of Henry McCarty/Antrim/Billy the Kid. That, however, is certainly not a confirmed fact. If they were the parents of Henry McCarty, he did have an older sister, Bridget. If both parents were Irish, as indicated by the 1860 New York census, New York City, Ward 1, District 1, I would guess that the names you listed are quite common among the Irish. However, names and ages in your census record should be compared against the 1860 census. Patrick McCarthy (sic), age 30, born in Ireland Cath'n (or Kate), age 29, born in Ireland Bridget, age 7, born in New York Henry, age 1, born in New York
Joseph is believed to have been born in New York 14 October 1863. It is believed that Henry McCarty was born in New York.
The pension application of Henry McCarty's step-father, William Antrim, indicated Catherine had only 2 children. Since they were married in 1873, his information could be questioned.
This record from an 1864 New York City directory, when compared to the 1861 and 1863, probably indicates Patrick McCarty died between 1863 and 1864, since Catherine McCarty was listed at the same address where Patrick McCarty had been listed.
There is conclusive evidence that both William H. Antrim and Catherine McCarty were residents of Sedgwick County, Kansas. There is conclusive evident that William H. Antrim and Catherine McCarty were married in Santa Fe 1 March 1873. The 1867 city directory provides conclusive evidence that William H. Antrim was a resident of Indianapolis.
I know nothing about Jesse Evans prior to his presence in Lincoln County.

Does anyone have any information on what happened to Jesse Evans after he escaped from Huntsville Prison, May 23, 1882? In reading the message board and other articles it seems that most people think that is was Billy Campbell who was claiming his brother's property with help from Mr. Morrison instead of Jesse Evans. If so, what could have happened to Jesse Evans? You would think after all this time that some information would have turned up about him. I have searched and searched on Ancestry and cannot find anything. Also, I did find a picture on the Internet of Jesse and Billy the Kid when Billy was very young. Has anyone else seen this? Susan, According to Emerson Hough in his book " The Story of the Outlaw" pub. 1907, he wrote that Jesse Evans whose real last name was Davis rode to Pecos City along with his brother George Davis, they got into a fight with some Rangers and Jesse's brother George Davis was killed by the Rangers, Jesse was captured and confined in the State Pen. for 20 yrs. he escaped but was returned. In the year 1882 when he should have been in prison he was seen and recognized on the streets of Lincoln, Jesse Evans or Davis was said to be in his twenties at the time and a Texarkana man and was said to have returned home after this only to find his wife remarried, she believed her husband was dead. He did not tell the new husband of his presence but took his boy away with him and by then his boy was about grown, and they went to Arizona and no mention of what became of him after that, So if Emerson Hough's version is true then Jesse did have a wife and a son, and his real last name was Davis. Also Emerson Hough wrote that Bill Campbell's real name was Ed Richardson, and he too dissapeared, he was kept at a Guard-house at Fort Stanton and one night he dissapeared in company with his guard and some cavalry horses and wasn't heard from again. I know this is just another version of Jesse Evsns life and like Thain said there's so many versions that it's hard to figure which is the truer version? There is a book I saw all about Jesse Evans I don't know if it's a rare book? but there's a picture of him or a supposed picture of him on the cover, I wonder if that book would have good researched information about him?

Thank you, Missy. I will get the book and read it. I did find Jesse Evans in the census in Huntsville, as I said and nothing further so that makes sense he probably had a different name. I just finished reading "Jessie Evans: Lincoln County Badman by Grady E. McCright and James H. Powell. I also just finished reading Frontier Fighter by George Coe and They "Knew" Billy The Kid by Robert Kadlec. I was somewhat disappointed in the George Coe Book. He felt that Garrett did the only thing he could do which was to kill Billy the way he did. In one of the books it stated that Jessie and Billy basically had a healthy respect for each other as they were both equal in their handling of arms. One said that Billy knew that Jessie was expert with a handgun but that no one could beat Billy with a rifle. My thought is that they did not want to find out and/or were somewhat friendly. It still amazes me how corrupt the people were in politics or in business. I find it surprising that even some of the successful ranchers would not turn down a stray cow or two. It reminds me of that T-shirt that says trust your neighbors but brand your cattle.
