Why did Brushy Bill confess he was really Oliver P. Roberts?
Alias Billy the Kid, p. 90 Brushy Bill said he met Mollie Brown in 1912 and married her. That is confirmed by a Van Zandt County, Texas, marriage license dated 21 August 1912.
Billy the Kid, His Real Name Was—, p. 117 Ollie registered for the WWI Draft in Little River County, Arkansas, 12 September 1918. He signed the registration card as Oliver Pleasant Roberts of Arkinda, AR. He identified his nearest relative as Mollie Roberts of Arkinda, Arkansas.

In 1912, William Henry Roberts was living in Van Zandt County, TX under the alias of Oliver Roberts and on August 21st he married Mollie Brown. I could check again but I'm pretty sure the marriage license did not list the middle name of "Pleasant" nor a middle initial of "P" even though most folks I know like to use their full name on their marriage certificate. In 1918 he registered for the draft. He included the middle name of "Pleasant" even though he had not been using that name. Why? Was it because that was his real name? Maybe. Maybe not. We'll not know until it is proven one way or the other. The fact that he put that name down does not prove it was his real name.

Fact: O.P. Roberts married Anna Lee in Van Zandt County in 1909 Fact: O. P. Roberts divorced Annie Roberts in Van Zandt County in 1910 Fact: Oliver P. Roberts and Anna Roberts are listed in the 1910 census of Van Zandt County. Fact: Oliver Roberts married Mollie Brown in Van Zandt County in 1912 Fact: Oliver Roberts bought land in Sevier Co, AR, as O. P. Roberts Fact: Oliver Roberts sold land in Sevier Co, AR, as O. P. Roberts and Mollie Roberts Fact: Oliver Roberts registered for the WWI draft in Little River Co., AR, as Oliver Pleasant Roberts, date of birth 26 August 1878 Fact: Oliver P. Roberts, son of Henry Oliver and Sarah Elizabeth Ferguson, born 26 August 1879 per niece Geneva Pittmon Fact: Oliver P. Roberts, residing in the household of his parents, Henry O. and Sarah E. Roberts, in Hopkins County was born August 1878
Really amazing coincidence that Brushy Bill said he was born on the same day, same month, same year, as Oliver P. Roberts was born.
What happened to the O. P. Roberts that married and divorced Anna Lee in Van Zandt County?
Select a theory: O. P. Roberts died in 1911 and was buried in an unmarked grave O. P. Roberts was Brushy Bill O. P. Roberts was an alias for Pat Garrett. O. P. Roberts moved to Liberia. The Van Zandt County marriage, divorce, and 1910 census records are fake.

"Fact: O.P. Roberts married Anna Lee in Van Zandt County in 1909" I agree and suspect this was the real Oliver Pleasant Roberts.
"Fact: O. P. Roberts divorced Annie Roberts in Van Zandt County in 1910" I agree and suspect this was the real Oliver Pleasant Roberts.
"Fact: Oliver P. Roberts and Anna Roberts are listed in the 1910 census of Van Zandt County." I agree and suspect this was the real Oliver Pleasant Roberts.
"Fact: Oliver Roberts married Mollie Brown in Van Zandt County in 1912" I agree someone who claimed to be Oliver Roberts married Mollie Brown.
"Fact: Oliver Roberts bought land in Sevier Co, AR, as O. P. Roberts" I wasn't aware of this but I'll take your word that someone claiming to be O.P. Roberts bought land
"Fact: Oliver Roberts sold land in Sevier Co, AR, as O. P. Roberts and Mollie Roberts" I wasn't aware of this but I'll take your word that someone claiming to be O.P. Roberts sold land
"Fact: Oliver Roberts registered for the WWI draft in Little River Co., AR, as Oliver Pleasant Roberts, date of birth 26 August 1878" I believe someone claiming to be Oliver did indeed register and I suspect it was Brushy
"Fact: Oliver P. Roberts, son of Henry Oliver and Sarah Elizabeth Ferguson, born 26 August 1879 per niece Geneva Pittmon" This probably appeared in a family Bible as described by Geneva Pittmon but that does not make if "Fact".
"Fact: Oliver P. Roberts, residing in the household of his parents, Henry O. and Sarah E. Roberts, in Hopkins County was born August 1878" When are you saying this occurred?
Now for the real fun: "Select a theory: O. P. Roberts died in 1911 and was buried in an unmarked grave O. P. Roberts was Brushy Bill O. P. Roberts was an alias for Pat Garrett. O. P. Roberts moved to Liberia. The Van Zandt County marriage, divorce, and 1910 census records are fake."
My answer, "none of the above". Although the one about Liberia might be worth looking into!

"Fact: Oliver Roberts bought land in Sevier Co, AR, as O. P. Roberts" I wasn't aware of this but I'll take your word that someone claiming to be O.P. Roberts bought land

Wayne, I thought you purchased a copy of "Brushy Bill...Just Another Billy the Kid Tall Tale?", by Roy Haws. Do you read the books you buy: Perhaps you skipped over the two Warranty Deeds in Roy's book, appendix L and appendix M, pp. 144-145, documenting the purchase and sale of land in Sevier County, Arkansas.
"Fact: Oliver P. Roberts, son of Henry Oliver and Sarah Elizabeth Ferguson, born 26 August 1879 per niece Geneva Pittmon" This probably appeared in a family Bible as described by Geneva Pittmon but that does not make if "Fact".
If birth information in a family Bible in possession of a family member is not fact, what constitutes "fact" in your alternate universe?
"Fact: Oliver P. Roberts, residing in the household of his parents, Henry O. and Sarah E. Roberts, in Hopkins County was born August 1878" When are you saying this occurred?
"I" am not saying this occurred. I am referring to information found in the 1900 census of Hopkins County, Texas, recorded on the 5th day of June, 1900, by W. H. Dickerson.
You do remember that Brushy Bill said he returned cousin Ollie's belongings to Ollie's surviving family members in Sulphur Springs. Those family members in 1900 were Henry O., Sara E., Oliver P., Thomas U., and Ervin Roberts, living in Hopkins County, Texas. That is found on page 99, Alias Billy the Kid. Maybe this is when Brushy Bill asked Oliver P. if it was O. K. to use his identity and birth date after 1911. You might also remember that Sulphur Springs just happens to be the county seat of Hopkins County.

Let's try to remain considerate of each other's differing viewpoints. I'm just saying that proof O.P. Roberts bought or sold land or that Geneva Pittmon said something appeared in the family Bible, etc. does not prove that Brushy's true identity was that of Oliver Pleasant Roberts. DNA would prove it but I don't think you have any of Brushy's DNA. Take the family Bible, for example. Are there any photos of that Bible? Who has seen it other than Geneva Pittmon? Who wrote the entries in that Bible and when did they write them? How old is that Bible? Who has it now?
