Very interesting photo and great questions. I have no doubt that is Billy Dixon. Are there any clues to what year the photo was taken?

MissyS, these are very nice pictures. I have the postcard, but it looks like you have found a copy of the tintype that is very nice. There is a lot of information and books on the first and second battle of Adobe Walls. I have been to Adobe Walls and have pictures from my visit years ago.
I showed my post card to Drew Gomber years ago and he pointed out Billy Dixon to me. I believe all the people in the picture were at Adobe Walls. Billy the Kid was not because he was in Silver City in 1874.
Very nice, thanks for posting these.

The postcard says it was Billy the Kid before turning outlaw, I don’t know exactly when this would have been? I kinda wonder if the Kid had met Billy Dixon and the other group of men somewhere else besides Adobe Walls area? Since most of the fighters in that battle were said to have been Buffalo hunters, maybe the Kid had met them in an area where Buffalo were being hunted or possibly he may have met them in Tascosa? I have not found a reference that Billy Dixon traveled to New Mexico, he may have and met The Kid there? It’s all guesses. It may not really be Billy the Kid in the photo?

Did he believe the possibility that Billy the Kid was in the photo or a mistaken identity? Thanks

MissiS,
My copy is an old postcard. On the back of the card, it has Multakrom Post Card Co. It also has Hetzel Photos. Dodge City, Kansas. When I showed it to Drew, he told me he didn't think it was a picture of Billy the Kid and pointed out Billy Dixon. The other thing Drew told me was he felt that the picture was taken in Dodge City, Kansas when the group was together just after the Adobe Walls incident. He thought that was about the only time the group would have been together. Drew also told me that he did not believe Billy the Kid was ever in Dodge City, KS. after they left Kansas about 1870 - 1871.
On a side note, I do have a few old newspaper articles where they think Billy came back to Kansas in about 1876 or 1877 and killed a man. I would need to dig them out of my files to give the correct date and the man's name.

Drew Gomber is said to be quite up on his facts about Billy the Kid. Thanks nmjames.

MissyS,
The man that was killed in Wichita, Kansas in 1876 was Walter Beebe. In the newspapers of 1876, they didn't name the man that killed him, but said he was a Texas man. In Sep. 1881 they said That Billy the Kid, recently killed in New Mexico, was another formerly of Kansas man. He lived in Wichita some years ago, and the Eagle says he killed a man by the name of Walter Beebe at that place.
There is a newspaper article from 1899 that says a man by the name of Jefferson Wierd killed Walter Beebe.

I wondered what the whole story was about it, and I tried to find out more detail, but all I was able to pull up is an article with a little telling of the man shot in his Saloon and by Billy the Kid from a bridge. Or maybe the Saloon was located by the bridge? chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn85032573/1881-08-18/ed-1/seq-3/print/image_681x648_from_250%2C3891_to_1109%2C4709/

The Sumner County Press, Wellington, Kansas, Oct. 05, 1876 Page 3 had this to say: The Wichita papers of last week, contain the particulars of the murder of Beebe, the proprietor of a dance house, by a Texan, a week ago last Saturday night. The parties had an altercation during the evening, during which the Texan was slapped in the face by Beebe. The former immedialely mounted his horse, rode into the city, procured a pistol, returned and fired at Beebe through a knot hole in the side of the building. The ball entered the left side, passed through the body and Waler Beebe was a corpse. Ther murderer mounted his horse and rode away in the darkness. Beebe was a reckless outlaw and his fate is not regretted by the citizens of Wichita.
Note: immedialely is how the word is spelled in the newspaper article.

I wonder why Billy the Kid would be suspected of being the shooter in the other article? I wonder if it may have been another Billy the Kid? I found a reference of a William or Willie Chadburn that was located in Kansas and liked to be called Billy the Kid, but I don’t know if he was active around the date of that Wichita shooting? and I don’t think he was a Texan. I also read that Chisum made a couple of cattle drives to Dodge City I don’t know when that was or if it could be possible the Kid could have accompanied the drive or not? I want to try and research this more.

MissyS,
You need to see if you can find a newspaper article in The Wichita Bacon, 17 April 1899, Page 5. It says Jefferson Wierd killed Beebe and was tried for it.
I feel the newspapers from 1881 is talking about our Billy the Kid but am not saying it is true. Billy did live in Wichita, Kansas with him mother back in late 1869 until 1871. When Billy was killed in 1881, I think they just wanted to be a part of the history. We know that Billy was in Arizona in 1877 because he killed Windy Cahill August 18, 1877. (He shot Cahill on the 17th. and he died on the 18th.).

Could it be the case was still under investigation at that time and Billy the Kid was thought of as possibly involved? If Walter Bebee was shot in 1876 and Windy Cahill was killed in 1877 Could there have possibly been a slim margin of time that the Kid could have been in Wichita long enough to be noticed to be considered involved with Bebee? I’m just wondering why he was mentioned in that article? But the newspapers didn’t always rely on facts.

It’s interesting that Brushy Bill mentioned that he went on a cattle drive to Dodge City with Chisum’s outfit and he got the photo taken with the Jones boys there. If it is Billy the Kid in the postcard then he had to have met Billy Dixon somehow some way?
