In the Washington Times Sept 21, 1902 there’s an interesting article about the interview between Lew Wallace and Billy the Kid, at the end of that article is a very odd statement that was printed saying Billy’s burial place was in Las Cruces New Mexico that a lowly little heap of earth in Las Cruces that strangers can point to the little grave with certain pride that Las Cruces is his resting place. So I thought after reading this that the newspaper had just mistaken Billy’s grave location with Pat Garrett’s since he is buried in Las Cruces only Pat Garrett was killed Feb 29, 1908 six years after the article, so then I thought maybe Las Cruces may have been the location that Billy the Kid’s body was moved to due to the flood in the Fort Sumner cemetery?, only the flood that caused the military graves to be relocated mentions happening two years after the article on Sept 30, 1904, however I did find mention the cemetery had a flood in 1889. I don’t know if the earlier flood in 1889 could have caused any graves to be moved to another location or not? The statement may be just a misprint or a mistake in the printing?, however it still leaves me wondering if or who could be buried in Las Cruces New Mexico?
