I noticed looking at the pic of Brushy’s original headstone that there are a couple of letters engraved backwards, I didn’t think much about it before, I always assumed it was just a mistake with the letters being reversed when engraved, I have seen other gravestones with backwards letters and words before, so this may be a stretch, however I was reading that sometimes backward letters and words and symbols could be engraved purposely to show a hidden message or to convey a certain meaning. I’m not implying that Brushy was ever in a secret society but often they used cryptic letters and symbols. I have a tendency to question things I find odd. The letter S and y in Brushy’s name was backward, could it have been on purpose to convey some message? The letter S we know is used to express more than one or used for plural at the end of a noun, in the name Roberts the backwards S; I’m wondering if it may have been purposely backwards to bring attention to the letter’s meaning as more than one or plural? This is just a guess, but could it have been trying to convey that there were more than one Ollie Roberts?, the backward S almost looks like the number 2? The backward letter y in the name Brushy is interesting because the bottom line of the y looks to be pointing toward the name Bill. Could it be conveying the name Billy somehow? maybe the letter y may also have a certain meaning in Spanish or in Latin? I’m not sure. Maybe there was no meaning at all only just a mistake in the engraving? I thought it interesting anyway. Yes, my opinion is that it is some type of coding. I believe that Brushy's father was involved with the Reeds/Shirley's and the James's in their efforts to steal funds from trains and banks that supported the Union during the war between the states to use the power of the purse against them. It is known that Morrison wrote in code with Brushy and that Brushy revealed some codes that he knew, such as code 377 to author Henry J. Walker in Jesse James "The Outlaw". It is just general knowledge that they used codes and when Brushy would write his "chicken scratch" he would talk, I mean write out both sides of his mouth and he would misspell words, this is when he was writing someone as "Billie the Kid" We know that when he wanted to write he had excellent penmanship. So, the chicken-scratch was a code. The 377 code meant a grave 3 feet wide by 7 feet long, by 7 feet deep. They would give that to a man that had violated orders. It is my belief that young Billy Roberts originally went to Lincoln to start over but in the context of trying to exist in post-war between the states of America. The Murphy/Dolan side served in the Union during the war and most of the Tunstall side served with the South during the war. The Murphy guys were conscripted a lot of them when they got off the boat from Ireland, or maybe were, but not on paper, and they not only during the Lincoln County War did not want Englishman Tunstall to get the government beef contracts, they thought they were better than those "liberals" (L.G. Murphy refers to McSween partisans including Kid as "liberals" in a letter to the War Department.) that served the Confederacy. It is my firm belief that Billy took up the passing of the counterfeit bills, because after trying to get along legally, he decided to be a thorn in the systems side by stealing horses and cows, and buying them with counterfeit money, in order to use the power of the purse against the system, people like John Chisum and the Santa Fe Ring. Gen. Lew Wallace was just a manager of the wounded Santa Fe Ring. So, yes the misspelling of the letters, having them backwards, I believe is a code for those reasons. Thanks, that is a very interesting theory. I didn’t know Morrison used code with Brushy or Brushy revealed a secret code to an author, Amazing, there’s so much mystery surrounding BTK I found a reference that a backward S could be Latin for the number 2 or Roman for a fraction. everythingwhat.com/what-does-a-backwards-s-mean One backward S kinda look like a Z however?
