I believe it was 5 days according to the Dudley trial but in Otero's book Salazar calls it the three day fight, and Martin Chavez says it was three days. Also George Coe says 3 according to this book. Brushy was not quoted as saying 3 in Alias BtK but maybe later in Lost Interviews, idk. Walter Burns argued back and forth through letters when challenged that it was 3 and not 5 days which is discussed in American Mythmaker. Call it what you want to I guess. I'll have to read the trial's transcript again.

Walter argued 'adamantly,' was the word I was looking for. He argued adamantly that it was a 3 day war. Some of the smartest people I ever met in the Billy the Kid Ring have been on this Brushy site. It really doesn't pertain to Brushy since he wasn't quoted as saying it but without having to dig up things myself I would like for those that have input, to respond on the subject.

Thain,
In the Court of Inquiry, it states the war started on July 15. Only a horse and mule lost their lives, I am not going to type each day, 16,17,18 and everyone knows what happen on July 19. This is why most people call it the five day battle.

I thank you for that. But if you go by people that were actually there it seems most of them didn't call it that. They called it 3 days if Otero and Burns were accurate in their recording. Otero recorded several as saying 3 and Burns was adamant to the point of arguments. But I understand most people now do call it 5. I guess a mule was killed one day and what not and stuff maybe. And then it became 5 days.

I realize more every day that I am not an expert and I have much to learn still. I am also interested in what documents Rasch is talking about when it says Billy was locked up during the Tunstall funeral. I have never seen them.

Thain,
The Testimonies in the Dudley Court of Inquiry was from people that were in Lincoln during the five day battle and is the only book that you will see the exact words that each said. Burns and Otero were not in Lincoln during the Five Day Battle.
Even though there was no one hit on the first day, if there was gunfire, I would call it a battle.

Thank you. Although I'm not happy about having to buy another book. Nmjames, can you tell me a few names that I get to hear from this book besides Dudley and Billy? If Salazar calls it a three day war in Otero's and Salazar was there and others in court are adding two then I guess I have to question Otero's book.

Thain,
The Court of Inquiry is a two volume book. I don't know if you can even get a coyp anymore but I know the daughter of R.M. Barron and she may have some left. There are to many names to post but Susan McSween, JB. Mathews, William Bonney, Jack Long, Ira Leonard, George Washington, Andrew Boyle Jose Chavez y Chavez Sam Corbet are just a few that gave a testimony.
Let me know if you would like a copy and I will contact R.M. Barron's daughter to see if she has a set and how much they are going for.

Thain
I checked with R.M. Barron's daughter and she has only one set of The Court of Inquiry Books left. If you want to know the price PM me and I will let you know. I will say this, they are half the price I paid for my set before I met her.

How did the horse and mule lose their lives on the first day of this war? The 5 day War.

It sounds to me as though in this instance the opinion on whether it was a 3 or 5 day battle is rather subjective. If there was some limited gunfire on the first day with only a horse and a mule being killed, some of the participants might have considered the first two days to be more of a standoff or a siege rather than an actual battle.

The length of the battle is subjective and of no importance. The description is important.
Walter Noble Burns, in "The Saga of Billy the Kid", described it as a 3 day battle. Brushy Bill also described it as a 3 day battle. That does not prove that Brushy Bill obtained his information about the Lincoln County war from "The Saga of Billy the Kid", but it suggests that he could have read the book.

My goodness TTT, I was about to hit like on your comment until you mentioned Brushy might have got it from SAGA. I think we studied it I must not have been good enough to show how Brushy corrected the order of events, etc. If ...but this is something you might like... If Brushy or the authors did steal from anything it wouldn't have been SAGA, it would have been the story by Leslie in the Nolan Billy the Kid Reader. However, I think Brushy's story matches real research because he got it right because he was there... But check that story out.. many similarities

The research of Walter Noble Burns, and the story told by Brushy Bill about the Lincoln County war are very similar. There are two possible explanations. 1. Brushy Bill was in Lincoln County during the Lincoln County war, and the research of Walter Noble Burns was accurate. 2. The research of Walter Noble Burns was an accurate account of the Lincoln County war, but Brushy Bill was not present during the Lincoln County War. Brushy Bill read “The Saga of Billy the Kid”, and made very few mistakes when he related information from Burns’ book to Morrison.

Like something they pull Excalibur out of. Just pm me and give me your phone number and I will explain the whole book to you.. very....slow...ly
