Just read the portion of this book that is on Billy the Kid and bibliography/notes that went with it. It was very interesting and well done although only about a third of it is on Billy and the rest Wyatt Earp and Hickock. The book goes into a lot of stuff on what Paulita may or may not have said and what she did and didn't say and what other sources there are that suggest she was Billy's lover and not Celsa. It also mentions in the bib that if you want to read the pro Celsa theory go to page 421 of O'brien's Lincoln County War. I am trying to decide whether it is more likely that Paulita or Celsa was Billy's main girl while remaining unbiased. The book gives plenty of examples of people back then who said Paulita was the girl but she denies it. Many people and the book suggest she may have been lying or mentioning Celsa because she was dead and using her as a red herring. Why would it be so important for her to deny it when she admits she liked him but didn't love him and they attended dances together? She says if they would have loved each other there was nothing she would not have done for him because that is the way of Spanish girls. Would she have helped fake is death or would Celsa have done that if that is the way of Spanish girls? She names Celsa as the girl. The book basically says that she always denied being his lover and that Burns wanted her to be the lover but she wouldn't let him do it. Probably because it wasn't true otherwise what difference would it make? Would she jokingly run into the cemetery and pull up his marker if she was his mourning lover? Also, supposedly Celsa's child has a memory of Billy taking the knife from their dwelling to get the meat. Could this be Billy's friend or if it was Billy how did Brushy know that Billy had been hanging around Celsa and Saval when everyone else seems to think he would have been at Pete's with Paulita. Yet Celsa's kid remembers someone taking the knife. Brushy and Barlow had been staying at the Gutierrez place but that night he thought Garrett might look for him so he stayed at Silva's. Perhaps when Barlow left he stopped by the Gutierrez place to grab a knife. I haven't read the Lincoln County War book but I would like to know what it says about Billy and Celsa. I tend to think both Paulita and Brushy were telling the truth. I don't think Brushy got the Celsa story from SAGA because I'm not even sure if the book came right out and mentioned her or just made it obvious but it has already been discussed elsewhere on the board on why Brushy was not getting his info from there. (He corrected errors and put the events in correct sequence) The Sinnichsen/Morrison may have because they call it the 3 Day War when already people were attacking Burns for getting that wrong as soon as the book came out. I find it unlikely that Brushy's author would have known so many correct details and words to put in Brushy's mouth or quotes and then get silly stuff like Katherine's last name Bonney and 3-day-war wrong. Which means Brushy knew more than the historians and researchers that were making the book. Two people are both accused of being in a relationship together, Billy and Paulita. Paulita denies it. Brushy denies it. If Brushy is Billy then that would mean both of the accused deny it and Billy and Paulita would know better than anyone. I'd like to know more about Celsa, maybe her kid was Billy's and she didn't have a husband.
