I found the mention of Billy’s words about Pat Garrett in John Meadows interview in the Roswell Daily Record of March 3,1931 a little strange according to Meadows Billy told him: “If I was laying out there in the arroyo and Pat Garrett rode by and didn’t see me, he would be the last man I would kill, I wouldn’t hurt a hair on his head; he worked pretty rough to capture us but he treated me good after he got me. He treated us humane and friendly and was good to us after he did get us captured, and I have ever such a good feeling for Pat Garrett.’ It seems strange after Garrett shot his pals Tom and Charlie why he would have a good feeling toward Garrett?, but that good feeling of Garrett Billy had could shed some light on why Brushy didn’t go after Garrett later in Texas, he avoided him when Garrett worked in Texas, also some accounts said Billy shot at Garrett and missed makes me think it was Barlow that walked in the room since Billy did tell Meadows that Garrett would be the last man he would shoot. But on the same token if it was really Billy that was shot by Garrett then the good feeling he had of Garrett could shed light on why he hesitated to shoot him first?

Yes Missy - those last interviews with BTK do show he wasn't a psychopathic killer...Barney Mason was a pathetic joke to him - he was never going to harm a hair on Chisum's head...but with Olinger -it was to the death ...each had killed each other's friends in the LCW...each was effectively the last man standing. Olinger had his chance but BTK took his.

Olinger and Billy did have some bad history from the LCW, but Pat Garrett also killed a couple of friends of Billy’s and Billy had no bad feelings toward Garrett it makes me feel that Billy and Garrett were good friends at one time, but it’s possible the treatment Billy got from Olinger was so bad that Garrett’s treatment of Billy was good in comparison in Billy’s mind and he respected that, also Billy resented killing Bell, so both Garrett and Bell’s treatment in comparison of Olinger’s treatment must have been great, so Billy’s feelings toward the two may reflect how bad Olinger treated him. I don’t remember if Brushy said he had good feelings toward Garrett in his interviews?, but offhand I don’t recall Brushy saying anything bad about Garrett? His feeling could have changed after the shooting, and the shot to the jaw, also the book Garrett wrote could have changed those good feelings some though?

I think he said at the time after the escape from jail that he wanted to kill Garrett and Chisum before leaving for Mexico, I doubt that Billy would not had shoot Garrett if he got is chance, like you said he shot and killed is two best friends...

It was strange behavior for a sherriff to leave town and a condemned man in the custody of two deputies...if Olinger killed BTK trying to escape -no one would care where Pat Garrett was -same result without Garrett having to do it himself. However BTK executed Bob instead and Pat had to find an excuse for being out of town....Iam sure James Dolan wasn't impressed that his most loyal henchman was gunned down by BTK outside his former seat of power -the House. Did Garrett leave town to somehow give BTK a chance to escape - or in the hope Olinger would do the job for him ?

Sometimes it's like a W C novel!

I think what Kerry is on to something here. It certainly seems suspicious that Garret suddenly decides to leave town for some bogus reason and right then Billy pulls of this amazing against all odds escape. The most logical explanation for this in my mind is that Garret was out of town because he was aware of the escape plan and had a hand in it. There is just to much of a coincidence to disregard this logical conclusion. Pat and Billy were old friends and oops, Pat just so happens to be out of town when Billy mysteriously succeeds with the most unlikely escape imaginable. If you follow logic, the answer is right there. And when you combine this with the fact that there were no photo taken of Billys dead body and the reports of the corpse having dark skin and a beard - it constitutes a quiet strong case for the theory that Billys death was faked.
