I don't remember. But I think it came from Catherine or Antrim and they said his name was Michael. The book is Trailing Billy the Kid It was also mentioned in the book Billy the Kid “The Endless Ride” by Michael Wallis, it suggested that Michael McCarty was Billy’s fathers name, and that a Catherine McCarty is listed in an 1868 Indianapolis City Directory and living on 199 North East Street at the time, and she was said to have reported to the compilers of that directory that she was a widow of a Michael McCarty, but it’s questionable that this is Billy’s family? I’m puzzled about the whole New York incident, I believe because of the arrest that was made that the Officer that told the press his accusations about the suspect being Billy the Kid were wrong, but there was a mention in Cline’s book that Joe Antrim was present along with two girls in front of the store, and that the three were taken into custody to the Oak Street Station where they stayed all night, and they were released the following morning on the orders of the coroner. I’m wondering if there’s really a record somewhere that Joe Antrim was present during the incident?, if so then Officer Dwyer could have more reason to believe Billy the Kid was involved?, but it could also be that Joe was another boy that coincidentally had the same name that was there when it happened? If it’s fiction, then why would this be made up? I’m puzzled as to where the information came from about Joe?

Officer Dwyer did not have the right person when he claimed that Billy the Kid was the same as Michael "Mick" McCarthy of the Fourth Ward, and he had killed Tom Moore in the summer 1876 in NYC. That McCarthy was captured about a year later in 1877. Joseph McCarty Antrim would have barely been 13 years old at the time of the 1876 stabbing in NYC. Catherine McCarty and William Antrim had resided in Indianapolis during the enumeration of the 1867 and 1868 city directories, and not far apart. They are both listed in land dealings for some of the same parcels in Kansas by 1870. There was a Michael McCarty (1836-1863) who served in the 5th Indiana Artillery, and he was injured during the Civil War in Georgia during 1863. McCarty died a few months later and is buried in Chattanooga, Tennessee in a marked grave.

"but there was a mention in Cline’s book that Joe Antrim was present along with two girls in front of the store, and that the three were taken into custody to the Oak Street Station where they stayed all night, and they were released the following morning on the orders of the coroner."Yes, it said something similar to that, except it stated in "The Fourth Ward Murder" article in the New York Times newspaper, September 11, 1876, pg 8: "James McCarty [ NOT Joseph McCarty], a brother of the murderer and two women, who were detained at the station house as witnesses, were discharged on an order from the coroner." Joseph McCarty Antrim was born in 1863, not ca 1854. That is verified by his 1916 Denver, Colorado voter registration and the 1920 Federal census record in Denver, where he is listed by name and street. When Joe died in 1930, the death certificate did state that he was 76 years old; but he was 67 and they got their numbers mixed up.
