It's a rare one. The True Life of Billy the Kid (not to be confused with the Don Jernardo one) the Noted New Mexican Outlaw or the Bold Bandit of the West. Edmund Fable Jr. published it supposedly 2 months after the Kid died and it's a good read and true to his biography. It's on Amazon at a decent price, look for the yellow covered one.

Some Books about Brushy Bill, alias Billy the Kid “Alias Billy the Kid”, Morrison & Sonnichsen, 1955 (the primary source of information for all subsequent books in this category) “Billy the Kid, Killed in New Mexico and Died in Texas”, Hefner & Valdez, 1995 “Billy the Kid and Me Were the Same”, Tunstill, 1998 “The Return of the Outlaw Billy the Kid”, Jameson, 1998 “Billy the Kid, Beyond the Grave”, Jameson, 2005 “Billy the Kid, The Lost Interviews”, Jameson, 2012 “Autobiography of Billy the Kid”, Edwards, 2014 “Cold Case: Billy the Kid: Investigating Histories Mysteries”, Jameson,

chivato88, If you have time to read only 3 books, these might give you the best perspective of Billy the Kid from different viewpoints.
Historical facts: “The West of Billy the Kid”, by Frederick Nolan, 1989
Alternative history: "Alias Billy the Kid", by William V Morrison & C L Sonnichsen, 1955
Alternative history skeptic: “Billy the Kid’s Pretenders”, Gale Cooper, 2010"
An excellent research book is the two volume Lincoln County War Series, Court of Inquiry by R.M. Barron.

Whatever it tries to do or doesn't do....it is your own perspective, but it is the Earliest book on Billy. I think it leaned more toward the Billy faking his death. It is the rarest book on Billy and the publisher is pulling it off the shelves by Christmas.

TTT's list is quite comprehensive and I've got most of those books - always useful to have a broad range of references. Nolan's compendium 'The Billy the Kid Reader' is also quite interesting, as is Gale Cooper's 'Billy the Kid's Writings, Words & Wit' which uses lots of primary sources. Those are next on my list:)

Probably the worst book Ive read about Billy, everything about it is wrong, total garbage. If you buy it to add to your collection put it on the shelve and dont waste your time reading this piece of crap
