I have read that when “Alias Billy the Kid”, written by Morrison and the western historian C.L. Sonnichsen, came out, the book received mixed reviews at the time but did win support from former President Harry S. Truman, who wrote to Morrison indicating he believed that Brushy was Billy the Kid and lamenting that he died before being able to go in front of the next governor, where he may have gotten a more favorable result. Does anyone know if there are any sources for this claim? If it is true, it is certainly interesting. If it is true, while it doesn’t really serve as evidence for or against Billy’s claim, it does show that a President of the United States, a larger powerful figure then a certain Governor of New Mexico, seemed to believe from what he read that Brushy was the Kid.

I've read this somewhere as well. Roosevelt knew Garret, so who knows what info could've been passed along that way.

I have a copy of his letter. He sounds like a true believer. I wish for this site to be an archives on all real Brushy related matters but I can't upload photos most of the time. To see a letter from Truman you can go to the Facebook group called Brushy Bill group and click on photos. Otherwise message me and I'll try to get it to you.
