Carlsbad newspapers reported the kidnapping of deputy sheriff Joe Johns.
Nellie Parker Stamps, Bonnie’s aunt, lived near Carlsbad, NM. Bonnie and Clyde were in Carlsbad in August 1932. A resident reported suspicious 3 strangers in the area. Deputy Sheriff Joe Johns went to investigate the report. He was kidnapped by Bonnie, Clyde, and Raymond Hamilton on August 14, and held captive as they fled to San Antonio, Texas. He was released at San Antonio, and returned safely to Carlsbad a few days later.
