The Three Pretenders
Brushy Bill Roberts knew J. Frank Dalton, and Uncle Kit Carson.
Brushy Bill and J. Frank Dalton were photographed together. They both lived in Gregg County near the end of their lives. Ola Everhard’s manuscript also documented their friendship. Brushy Bill wrote to Uncle Kit Carson 1 April 1947 while he was in Dora, New Mexico. He addressed Uncle Kit Carson, who lived in Roswell, NM, as “Dad”, and said that he heard from Billie the Kid, and hoped he would come visit in Hico. He signed the letter, “your son”.
Brushy Bill pretended to be Billy the Kid.
J. Frank Dalton pretended to be Jesse Woodson James.
Oran A. Woodman pretended to be Two Braids, captured and named by Comanches before he escaped. Next, he claimed to be Tommy Two Braids, a survivor of the 1870 massacre of the Springfield family in McMullen County, Texas. He next claimed to be Uncle Kit Carson until his death in Roswell, NM. He was not related to Kit Carson

I've just been looking at the letter from Brushy to Uncle Kit, and found it very interesting. It reminded me of a place that i used to work where one of the staff called his boss "Dad".
It seems to me that a more likely explanation for Brushy referring to Uncle Kit as Dad would be if Uncle Kit had been his mentor when he was trying to establish himself as Ollie Roberts. If uncle Kit had coached Brushy on how he could best go about establishing his new identity, (which Uncle Kit was said to be an expert in); then Uncle kit would have been the father of Ollie Roberts and Ollie would have been his son in a sense. This may have been a code between them.

"If uncle Kit had coached Brushy on how he could best go about establishing his new identity, (which Uncle Kit was said to be an expert in); then Uncle kit would have been the father of Ollie Roberts and Ollie would have been his son in a sense. This may have been a code between them." Nik, I think you are correct. Oliver Pleasant Roberts seems to be morphing into O. L. Roberts and acquiring information about Billy the Kid while he was in BtK Territory. Maybe this is where Brushy Bill got the idea for participation in the Buffalo Bill and Pawnee Bill Wild west shows, Rough Riders, deputy sheriff in the Oklahoma Territory. Lots of info about Woodman at historical.ha.com/itm/western-expansion/william-uncle-kit-carson-massive-archive-of-the-eccentric-indian-scout-and-wild-west-show-performer-includes-his-rifle-p/a/6101-44186.sExcerpts: "he did perform in a number of Wild West and Circus shows in the 1900-1930 period including five seasons with Buffalo Bill; he was close personal friends with Pawnee Bill and Diamond Dick; he knew Geronimo personally," "This older gentleman told amazing stories about his birth in New Mexico in 1858 to Kit Carson's half-brother William and his wife Maria, about being an Army scout, a cattle drover for John Chisum, a personal friend of Billy the Kid, a participant with Teddy Roosevelt in the Spanish-American War, appearing with Buffalo Bill and Pawnee Bill Wild West shows, and the list goes on. " "He was hired by Buffalo Bill for the Wild West exhibit at the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. After that, he became a deputy marshal of the Oklahoma Territory. In 1895, he claimed to be elected city marshal in Chandler where he had a shootout with the Bill Cook gang. Next, he toured the northeast in a "buffalo show" before coming back to the reservation. In 1904, he played in the Cummings Wild West Show at the St. Louis World's Fair before joining the Younger Brothers' Oklahoma Wild West Show in Dallas, circa 1906."

Billy the Kid also called the Jones boy's father "dad" according to an interview in "They Knew Billy the Kid". Brushy called Uncle Kit dad, Billy called old man Jones dad. The old man came seeking revenge for the death of his son, but billy said you're too old for this dad, get back on your wagon go home I'll take care of this for you. He said that while shackled to the floor. Didn't Brushy also mention he made a promise to the family to get revenge. This sounds like a reasonable explanation of how that promise came about. Billy didn't travel to go see them, the dad came and saw him. He was promising just to save the old man from getting himself in trouble.
