The one record above has a William Roberts living with people that could probably speak Spanish. The Jose Flores list his job as herding cattle. This was from Dimmitt County 1870 census. It says William could read and write and that his father was not born in a foreign country.

Just received some cool news back from the Archival Records place in DC. I'm trying to find where Brushy had been court martialed for shooting allegedly shooting at officers. Here is a copy of the letter they sent me, I'm just getting started, I will find more info on these guys and they will be searching for other names such as Oliver Pleasant Roberts, Ollie L Roberts, John S. Murphy, etc. Dear Mr. Mckinley412:
This is in response to your inquiry requesting information pertaining to Court-Martial Case Files for Spanish American War soldiers who fought in Cuba.
We searched Record Group 153: Records of the Judge Advocate General's Office (Army), Entry 15: Court-Martial Case Files (July 1894-1917).
The Court-Martial Case File Index pertaining to July 1894-1917 consists of four boxes that contain listings for approximately 4000 or so soldiers, who faced Court-Martial charges during this period of time.
This list is arranged alphabetically by name of the soldier.
If you can provide the name(s) of the soldier(s), who faced Court-Martial charges, then we can search the index by name in order to identify the Court-Martial Case File #. The Court-Martial Case File would include the transcript of the trial.
In addition , we searched RG 153, Entry 15: Court-Martial Case File Index (July 1894-1917) under the name of Brushy Bill Roberts.
We were only able to identify the following soldiers:
*Private William Roberts, Troop E, 9th U. S. Cavalry (1/7/1898), Case # 5394. *Private William E. Roberts, Battery M, 5th U. S. Artillery (8/7/1899), Case # 12049. *Private William H. Roberts, Company H, 15th U. S. Infantry (6/18/1898), Case # 5978.

Update: Should have info on two of the William Roberts' court martials by end of the year. They are sending me price quote now. No luck on finding Leon Metz book The Shooters yet to find Pic of 14year old Brushy. Could be in the John Wesley Hardin book also by Metz. They have copy of that one hour from me. Not sure when I will get to it.

I have the book, John Wesley Hardin by Mr. Mets and may have the Shooters but will need to check on that one. I didn't see any picture in the John Wesley Hardin book that could be Brushy. I will check on The Shooters. If I don't have a copy, I think I can get one.
(just a side note: Charles Bowdre was left handed and has a left handed cross draw holster on in the picture of him and Manuela.)

I don't have the book The Shooters by Leon Metz. I was in Midland, TX. today and went by the Haley History Center and they had a copy. I looked through it and didn't see any picture that could be Brushy. All the pictures had names of the people in them. There were two pictures on the same page of Texas Rangers, but none of them would have been 14 years old. The men in these pictures were not named.

Thanks nmjames. We need to check the other Metz books people. I just paid 48 bucks to get court martial records for William Roberts'. If you guys could finish checking them other books for his 14 year old photo that would be great. It'd be nice to solve this and be done with it.

I looked in the books The Shooters, John Wesley Hardin and The encyclopedia of Lawmen, outlaws, and gunfighters all by Leon Metz. I did not find the picture you are looking for.

Thank you my friend. I believe the photo could answer a lot of questions. But ... maybe the original can never be found. All I see is that he had fold over collars and the year must have been about 1974 according to Brushy's story.

No luck on the court martials. Neither one is likely to be Brushy.

View Attachmenteah, and up the road from this family is some man named McCarthy and I backtracked him and I think if I got it right, then he is the brother of Patrick McCarty (McCarthy) husband of Catherine McCarty the same one that is alleged by some to be Billy the Kid's mom. You say that the Roberts and the McCarty's are related?
