The above mentioned book, which I’ve linked below, still left enough to my imagination that the possibility of BTK surviving the chest wound from Garrett came totally into view. Especially if Charlie Bowdre’s wife was one of the towns people taking BTK’s body. It was dark. BTK could’ve easily played dead.
Then the legend of the towns people, Charlie’s wife and the senoritas mainly, switching his body with someone who had died the night before, and having BTK ride off into hiding fits right in. That would also jive with the botched inquests and the speed at which the burial was performed. And I think that the towns people were so distraught and upset with Garrett that they refused to disrespect BTK and let Garrett have his picture taken with the presumed dead body of BTK. This would lend itself to cover that fact that BTK was hiding or, maybe, already riding off from Fort Sumner. Meaning, the man in the coffin was not BTK.
Maybe Garrett was aware of the possibility of BTK surviving but feared retribution if he had gone after BTK again. Garrett had family that lived in Sumner. These were ruthless times and harassing or even murdering family members and/or friends happened. Garrett may have feared for his family’s safety, hence letting BTK go and not pursue the matter further.
I’d love to see a remake of Young Guns (as a trilogy) with the set of events as Siringo has laid them out. Younger actors as well, of course There is a lot of story to be told.
Romantically, I’d love to think BTK got away and settled down with a señorita. But for now, I’m gonna keep searching for other texts.
I’m not sure why this means so much to me. My mother is infatuated with my own family’s genealogy, but BTK is someone who has lived in lore for me my whole life. My research has brought him to life for me.
Here is a link to a free online copy of Siringo’s book:

Thank you to all who post or have posted in the past. It’s all very helpful. Even the snarky skeptics who play devil’s advocate so well.
