The book "The Authentic Life of Billy The Kid" was not entirely written by Pat Garrett, it was supposed to been written with help by Ashmun "Ash" Upson, Ash had boarded with the Antrims, Catherine Antrim took in boarders for a time, I believe the name "Kathleen" was added to the book by Ash Upson because it was what her husband or others had called her, and him being a boarder had heard her called by that name? If so then Brushy would have known that info too because he would have heard it while he lived with her as well.

Brushy Bill’s Story
What did Brushy Bill know? Brushy Bill knew a lot about the Lincoln County war. In fact, his story is remarkably similar to the story told by Walter Noble Burns in “The Saga of Billy the Kid”, published in 1926. Could he have been 2 years old during the Lincoln County war? Could he have read the book by Burns? Was he illiterate? He signed his name to Arkansas land warrants in 1918. He signed his full name as Oliver Pleasant Roberts when he registered for the WWI draft in Little River County, Arkansas.
What did Brushy Bill not know? Rasch and Mullin published information about the 1873 marriage record of William Antrim and Catherine McCarty in 1953. Waldo E. Koop published information about the 1870 and 1871 Sedgwick County records in 1964 that showed both William Antrim and Catherine McCarty owned property in Sedgwick County.
Is there any record that indicates the mother of Billy the Kid was Kathleen Bonney? New Mexico court records identify Billy the Kid as William Bonney. Pat Garrett said the Billy the Kid was William H. Bonney, and his mother was Kathleen. The New Mexico marriage record and the Sedgwick County property records leave little doubt that the mother of Billy the Kid was Catherine McCarty, later Catherine Antrim. Why did Brushy Bill refer to her as Katherine, or Kathleen Bonney? Was he not living with her in Wichita, Kansas in 1870 and1871 when her name was recorded as Catherine McCarty?
Why did Brushy Bill never refer to his stepfather as William? Could it be because he was never identified as William Antrim in any book he read? Why did Brushy Bill never mention Kathleen’s other son? Why did Brushy Bill never mention Wichita, Kansas?
Brushy Bill must not have known when or where Catherine McCarty and William Antrim were married. Brushy Bill said he left Silver City in 1872; was in Carlton, Texas, until May 1874. Henry McCarty and Joseph McCarty were witnesses at the 1 March 1873 marriage of William Antrim and Catherine McCarty in Santa Fe.
