One key part of the Brushy Bill Roberts story that none of the writers seem to agree on is the true identity of Joe Hines, William V. Morrison's mysterious client. I've heard him identified as J. Frank Dalton, and/or Jesse James, and/or a different guy named Jesse James, and/or the Lincoln County War's Jesse Evans or William Campbell. He's supposedly the man who tipped off Morrison to Billy the Kid. Who do you guys think Joe Hines really was?

According to Brett Hall's book "The Real Billy The Kid - AKA Brushy Bill Roberts", Hines' real name was William Campbell. Brett makes a very good case for that and alleges to have read it in Morrison's original notes. Either that is correct or Brett really played fast and loose with the facts. I've never met Brett, only exchanged a few emails years ago, but I've met his friend Dr. Jannay Valdez and found him to be an honest and sincere man who had total faith in the research Brett had done. I believe Brett.

I have a tape with Dr. Jannay Valdez and a couple of other Brushy people on it.
They state that Garrett killed the wrong man because John Poe said, "Pat you killed the wrong man". Dr. Valdez and the others know that was not all that Poe said. If they know the rest of of what John Poe said, is it honest just using part of what he said?

I don't remember who was asking but in the book The Real Billy the Kid AKA Brushy Bill Roberts by Hall it talks quite a bit about Hines being Campbell but someone was asking about his brother. It says Morgan Campbell died Apr. 2. 1948 Minot, ND (North Dakato Bureau of Vital Statistics)

Thain, There is a North Dakota website, Department of Health, Public Death Index apps.ng.gov/doh/certificates/deathCertSearch.htm, or https://www/ndhealth.gov, and select "Public Death Index" The death of Morgan Campbell is not recorded in the database anywhere in North Dakota in 1947, 1948, or 1949. The death of Franklin Morgan James is not recorded in the database. Presumably Brett Hall believed that the death certificate of Morgan Campbell, who supposedly died in Minot, Ward County, 2 April 1948. existed in the North Dakota Bureau of Vital Statistics. Maybe the state records are incomplete. Maybe not. Is there a copy of that death certificate included in Brett's book or Morrison's book? Has the grave of Morgan Campbell been located? Is there an Ancestry.com family tree listing a Morgan Campbell that died in North Dakota?

The link won't work for me. I only see where it says that a new law was passed and you have to write them, send money and ID, to get the record. I suspect if you do this, you will find what you are looking for.
