So I stumbled across WC Jameson's book and it opened a huge can of worms for me. I LOVE this story! These forums look like a rich and detailed treasure trove of information. A LOT of information. Where do I start? What books do you recommend? Is there a favorite thread on here? Help dig me out of this rabbithole Thanks! Amanda

Amanda;(mandam) Welcome to the board, Billy The Kid An Autobiography, by Dan Edwards, and The West Of Billy The Kid by Frederick Nolan are just a couple off hand that come to mind, there's a thread under the category of books on Billy The Kid and Brushy Bill on the board and there's a lot of posts on suggested books on that thread to get you started, I don't have a favorite thread myself but there are a lot of interesting discussions on everything Brushy Bill, and Billy the Kid and even Jesse James on the board. Looking forward to your views on the subjects, enjoy.

Amanda Amanda, There are many books from which to choose. The following is not a complete list
Books about Billy the Kid can be divided into 3 different categories.
Some Books about Henry McCarty, the real Billy the Kid “The Authentic Life of Billy the Kid”, Garrett, 1882 (Brushy could have read this one.) “The Saga of Billy the Kid", Burns, 1925 (Brushy could have read this one.) “The Real Billy the Kid”, Otero, 1936 (Brushy could have read this one.) “History of the Lincoln County War”, Fulton, 1969 “High Noon in Lincoln”, Utley, 1987 “Billy the Kid”, Utley, 1989 “The West of Billy the Kid”, Nolan, 1989 (recommended) “The Lincoln County War, A Documentary History”, Nolan, 1992 “Such Men as Billy the Kid” , Jacobsen, 1994 “The Endless Ride”, Wallis, 2007 “To Hell on a Fast Horse”, Gardner, 2010
Some Books advocating that Brushy Bill was Billy the Kid “Alias Billy the Kid”, Morrison & Sonnichsen, 1955 (the primary source of information for all subsequent books in this category) “Billy the Kid, Killed in New Mexico and Died in Texas”, Hefner & Valdez, 1995 “Billy the Kid and Me Were the Same”, Tunstill, 1998 “The Return of the Outlaw Billy the Kid”, Jameson, 1998 “Billy the Kid, Beyond the Grave”, Jameson, 2005 “Billy the Kid, The Lost Interviews”, Jameson, 2012 “Autobiography of Billy the Kid”, Edwards, 2014 “Cold Case: Billy the Kid: Investigating Histories Mysteries”, Jameson,
Some Books disputing Brushy Bill's claim the he was Billy the Kid “Billy the Kid, His Real Name Was”, Johnson (recommended) “Billy the Kid’s Pretenders”, Cooper, 2010 “Brushy Bill, Just Another Texas Tall Tale”, Haws, 2015
Jameson is a talented writer and story teller.
There are 3 major problems (and many lesser ones) with Brushy Bill's story that he was Billy the Kid: A coroners jury report exists confirming the death of Billy the Kid in 1881. The assumption that Brushy Bill adopted the identity of Oliver Roberts, son of Henry Oliver and Sarah Elizabeth Ferguson Roberts, even though there is no record of his demise. The WWI draft card of Brushy Bill where he said his name was Oliver Pleasant Roberts, and provided the same birth date as Oliver Roberts, son of Henry Oliver and Sarah Elizabeth Ferguson Roberts.

I would start with the original FIRST EDITION 19955 book on Brushy which is on ebay right now for a very good price of 50 dollars. It contains vital footnotes that you must have if you want the most evidence for your buck on Brushy. If you just want history on the traditionally excepted history of Billy then get West of Billy the Kid or a Short and Violent Life. If you want a fun read like a novel to get acquainted then To Hell on a Fast Horse is completely based on newspaper accounts, documents, and oral history etc. meaning the author didn't make any of it up but that it is all based on real historical accounts whether they were true or not. The book they Knew Billy the Kid is pretty cheap still and contains interviews with people who knew him or heard stories, it's fun.
