I have read a couple books and have stopped at the tomb in NM at Ft Sumner...yes love the history! Anyhow, I just finished reading Jamesons book. Very interested and tons of great circumstantial evidence. The issue I run into is the photo comparison...I just don't think Brushy looks anything like the Kid. His nose is way to pointy and his lips are wider...I have looked at tons of old photos of my family..my grandparents ect...young vs old..yes they look different but you can tell FOR SURE it is them just by looking at the photos...also, Brushy Bill was claiming to have ridden with Jesse James as well....

Your comments are very similar to many I've heard over the years and I certainly understand why there are doubts. I would disagree though with the specific differences you see in the photos. If you measure the width of the nose and the mouth they actually are the same. My comparisons shown on my website demonstrate this and in fact there are many, many similarities between the faces that are just too uncanny to chalk up to chance or coincidence.
Yes, it has been said Brushy claimed to have ridden with Jesse James but that is really just an exaggeration of comments he made to a reporter related to having known Jesse. It is a commonly accepted historical record that Billy and Jesse did meet and Jesse proposed that Billy join his gang. Billy said no. When Brushy was asked if he could identify J. Frank Dalton as the real Jesse James, he had not yet admitted he was Billy The Kid. He either mistakenly, or correctly identified Dalton and of course was asked "how he knew him". He wasn't going to say "because I'm Billy The Kid and I met him 68 years ago!" So he may have made some reference to having ridden with him. But I suspect that was exaggerated reporting by the newspaper man more than anything else.
Regardless, either way, it really doesn't prove anything against Brushy's claim.
Thanks for your post. I hope you'll share more. As you say, it is very interesting.

Actually, the younger image of Brushy Bill and the iconic tintype of Billy match up beautifully (see my earlier thread w/side-by-side comparisons)—judge for yourselves

i've done many photo comparisons and what ive decided is that it is never and exact science. sometimes you have to look back and 'read between the lines' so to speak. in any given instant in the photoflash, a person can look a number of ways. and, some people have many different looks; i.e. sometimes dark featured, then very fine featured in another light. this was the case with bonney. several of the other photos attributed to bonney are, in my opinion, truly him. he was just a rubberfaced sort of guy. had many different ways of dressing. of the tintype, some folks have stated what i think, that he didn't exactly take his 'freshest' photo that day. at this consideration, i generally defer more to computer analysis and transposition for a better read.

There are a couple pictures of billy the kid on the internet. I know they probably aren't authenticated but you can clearly see that is the same guy on the tintype...brushy bill looks nothing like billy. look here www.newstribune.com that is definitely the same guy in the tintype..I went to Man and typed outlaw billy the kid and those pictures came up...that is billy look at the eyes.

gail, my teenage son came in when i was looking at that photo and he said 'hey its brushy as a teen!' ... i think it looks just like brushy, and it matches the tintype, the globe photo, and the 1949/50 photos. in the camera eye brushy could look dark (probably because of his 1/4 cherokee) or very blond and patently irish.

Greeting fellow "Kid" enthusiasts! I'm no forensic expert, but do possess a keen artist's eye. It's my humble opinion that William ("Brushy Bill") Henry Roberts WAS the real "Kid". I read that Mr. Roberts had his teeth extracted In the 1930s—altering his earlier, more oval profile (and eliminating his notable incisors—which he reportedly kept as mementos). The key for me were the EYES and the distinctive EARS. I guarantee if any of us live to see 91, we'll look markedly different from 21. Compare his eyebrow color and shape—a match!
