Some say Brushy was illiterate. Some say not. Some say his writing resembled the scrawl of a small child. Here's an image from a letter written by Brushy. Difficult to read, yes. But so is the writing of some college graduates. I've seen much worse. Note he knew what year Belle Starr was killed. It looks like my handwriting! Hahaha.

Not to purposely throw water on anything, but the clerk very well could have written their names on the top portion and the minister or justice of the peace filled out the bottom section. I'm a minister and that is the way the bottom section is still done in the State where I live

The top signature is from the recently authenticated "Billie Letter" found in the Wallace Collection. The second is Brushy's. The third is from the December 12 1880 letter from Billy to Wallace, in reference to Billie Wilson.

p.s. Gale Cooper's book Writing's, Words, and Wits proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that Billy wrote all of his own letters. On pages 194-198 she points out that Billy made many errors while writing that help us determine whether or not it is handwriting or not. 1. he often doesn't capitalize the first letter of a sentence. 2.! He will often capitalize Words that should not be capitalized! 3. He mispellls words. 4. He often omitted periods at the end of a sentence
A Letter from O.L. Roberts to Uncle Kit (supposedly he claimed to be Carson's nephew and not the real Carson) The letter is dated April, 1 1949. It is reproduced exactly as it was written meaning no typos corrected.
Dear uncle kit Carson...dad we heard from Billie the Kid he is doing fine We are Looking for him to come home he will stay with us 2 weeks thin he Will go over sea for 3 years dad I will do my best to get Billie the Kid to come By and see you...Love and Best wishes to you from your son OL Roberts.

mckinley412, Brushy (Oliver P Roberts) had an interesting collection of acquaintances. Uncle Kit Carson was a performer in wild west shows. He was also known as Two Braids and Tommy Stringfield. He claimed to have been a captive of the Apaches for 40 years. His birth name was Ora A Woodman, born in Zane, Ohio, in 1870. Brushy Bill might have met him at rodeos, for Brushy’s cousin said Brushy retired from the rodeo circuit. DeWitt Travis was a promoter of East Texas oil fields. J. Frank Dalton was one of the many Jesse James pretenders. William Tunstill suggested that D. H. McCook and Justin Bullard might have been deputy marshals in the Oklahoma Territory. Census records show they were farmers. Tunstill identified Andrew Jackson Berlin as “Gunslinger” Ozark Jack Berlin. Census records reveal that he worked in a sawmill and brick factory.

Brushy Bill also worked in Wild West Shows. He ran his own Wild West Show. There's no telling who all he met. He was probably speaking about himself in the letter but being careful in case the wrong person found it. That way he wouldn't be hung for the murder of Sheriff Brady and tried for the murders of Bell and Olinger.

I know Brushy Bill claimed he participated in the Wild West shows of Buffalo Bill, and Pawnee Bill, and later claimed that he had his own wild west show. I don't believe that anyone has found any credible proof supporting any of those claims.

There is no conclusive evidence that Texas Kid was an alias of Brushy Bill. Brushy said one of his aliases was Texas Kid. The affidavit of Robert E. Lee, who said he first met BtK in 1889, confirmed that Brushy’s alias was Texas Kid. By his own admission, Robert E Lee had never met William Bonney. Martile Able said Texas Kid was an alias of Brushy Bill. She had never met William Bonney. Brushy did not have a monopoly on the Texas Kid nickname. Other men could have chosen the same nickname.

Other men could have spelled Billy the Kid as Billie the Kid but only Brushy and the real Billy did. Other men could have claimed to be Billy but only Brushy had large wrists and small hands. Etc.

Aren't there some letters written by Billy to Lew Wallace, etc. Does the handwriting compare? Not that it would, necessarily, since my handwriting has gotten much worse as I've gotten older, but wondered if there are any similarities?

All legitimate points to consider, no doubt. I've seen them all before and considered them all. Accept the last one. Where did Brushy state he lived with his "half aunt and her mother"? I don't recall ever seeing or hearing about that comment. Also, can you point to where Joseph said he was born in New York? Just curious. Brushy said his father was James Henry Roberts and his mother was Mary Adeline Dunn. Maybe he made up those names? Maybe not? Maybe he made up a great deal of the information he gave Morrison? Maybe not? Maybe he exaggerated a lot? Maybe not? Maybe he was just a crazy old man looking for notoriety? Maybe not? In spite of all the questions you point out I still believe the odds are he really was Billy The Kid.
