It was found in 1936 in a family album once owned by a rancher from Silver City. Under the photo it says courtesy The Oregonian. This is all it says about it in The Gunfighters by Horan although I wonder if Nolan mentioned it in his West book.

oluckyman,
If you will look up 1877 Wanted Poster for Billy the Kid, you will find the picture on it with the name Wm. Wright known as Billy the Kid. Reward $5,0000 with positive proof of his death, Jim Dalton, Sheriff.
If you can't find it let me know.

Oluckyman, the book doesn't have much on Billy. It appears you have a digital copy. Would it not be easier to just print that one out or search for another image online using photo search. I hate to see you have to order this whole book just for that photo.
Nmjames, what is the story behind the William Wright poster. Just a silly souvenir poster right? But why did they add the other phony info?

Welcome to the board Oluckyman, That picture is in the book "I Buried Billy" by Paco Anaya on pg.28, it is a somewhat small picture about 5 inches, it says it's an unproven photograph that many believe to be Billy The Kid. (Life Magazine, 1932), it doesn't say what month, perhaps there was a larger image of it, and more about it in that magazine? Life Magazine may have an archive online?

Sorry, I noticed Oluckyman that you did find and bought the book Thain told you about and you wont need another picture, sorry, I missed that. I have wondered myself though about the provenance of that picture, during the writers project there may have been persons that were interviewed that knew Billy and produced photos, I wonder if the family album owned by the rancher in Silver City that Thain was referring to was one of those persons?

He's doing research on it's history and trying to find the best pic available so your info might be very helpful Missy. The 1932 Life magazine is a good lead but just keep in mind Horan's book says it wasn't discovered until 1936. And it may just be a chalk drawing, it might not get much better than that. I have about 50,60,70 Billy books and I couldn't find it any of them but Horan's.

oluckyman, I have an almost complete library of awesomeness if you want to buy all the essential Billy books. I'm asking for 1800, maybe 2000. I guess it depends.

It's also in the book "Billy The Kid A Date with Destiny" by Carl Breihan 1970, it says it's the first known photograph of Billy The Kid taken in Silver City.NM

Hi all, the wanted poster giving Billy's name as "Wm. Wright" appears to be authentic. Getty images and Fototeca Storica Nazionalie della Italia both offer high resolution scans of two different versions, the latter one giving the date 23 September 1875.
