I'm not sure where you got that statement. Everyone knew Jesse James was wanted in 80 and 81. All you need to know for now is that Chapman was killed in 1879 (or i guess looks like Wallace said end of 1878 and it is strange coincidence that Tunstall and Chapman were killed on the same anniversary, maybe something to look at further, possible coincidence or serial killer in the loose or Wallace was correct and others have been wrong and they were killed in years, I'm not looking that up now. HOWEVER, Jesse James was wanted for being in New Mexico in -end of 1878- early 1879- and whenever else Campbell is wanted, for that murder etc, plus Hoyt putting him there the same time. TTT, Don't worry about where Jesse was in 1880 and 1881 unless you can show William Campbell was somewhere else at that time. I will look a bit later but ... For now just know that Jesse did get around a lot, and he could have been there. By the way, there are not countless stories of him being everywhere as you suggested. But there does happen to be several stories that take place in New Mexico............... Missouri, Minnesota, Arkansas, New Mexico. Something like that. Not Arizona, Louisiana, Texas, but stories of him being in New Mexico.

"Its a long story but a lot of the information (not all) on the investigation done by Steve Sederwall/ Cold West is in W.C. Jameson's book "Cold Case" that was published by Pequot Press. Short story is that they were using cattle to launder counterfeit money." Can you cite credible evidence or records that show the US Secret Service was aware that Jesse and Billy the Kid were in on a counterfeit ring in Lincoln? Thanks,
There is a lot of information on this and too much to recreate here. Bottom line is that multiple people were involved in "selling" cattle for counterfeit money and laundering that money through a Missouri bank. Many associates of Billy the Kid and Jesse James were involved and are named in the Secret Service reports. Billy Wilson was indicted and a trial was held The United States of America vs. William Wilson under Judge William Bristol on May 30,1881.
On January 2, 1881 Special Agent Azariah Wild in Lincoln mentions that he has three men on James and that had he known he was wanted he could have arrested him in New Mexico.
Do you believe Jesse James never came to Lincoln? If so, what credible evidence do you have to support your claim?
mckinley412, This is the source of the statement, "On January 2, 1881 Special Agent Azariah Wild in Lincoln mentions that he has three men on James and that had he known he was wanted he could have arrested him in New Mexico."

In Cooper's book Writings, Words, and Wits she quotes a letter that from Wild that says Jesse is using the name William Campbell which would mean Jesse was in Lincoln.
