I have a theory about Jesse Evans role in the killing of Tunstall, Im wondering if Jesse Evans was injured at the time and was recovering from gunshot wounds at the time the posse rode out and shot Tunstall? In Coe's book he said Evans told Billy that he didn't shoot Tunstall and Billy acknowledged it, and in Emerson Hough's book he said Jesse Evan's almost died after he and Tom Hill robbed a German man in Alamagordo, NM, near a sheep ranch, while the two were going through a cash box the man had under the wagon seat the man open fired on them killing Hill and shooting Evans in the arm and lungs, Jesse was able to ride away bareback and get help, I believe he wound up at Fort Stanton where he got medical help then when he recovered he escaped. If this is true, I wonder if this could have been at or close to the time of Tunstall's killing and Evans wasn't able to be a part of it?

MissyS:
John Tunstall was killed Feb. 18, 1878, 140 years ago today. Tom Hill was killed and Jesse (Jessie) Evans was shot in the wrist and body about the middle of March in 1878, so Tunstall was killed about a month before Evans was shot. You can find this in a book about Jessie Evans as well as many other books. I have also found the story in The Mesilla Valley Independent on March 16, 1878 and even more on the story in the same newspaper on March 23, 1878. The article on March 16, has the date of the killing of Hill on about March 14, 1878 but I have seen it said he was killed on March 9,10,13,14 and 15th. You can take your pick but it was in March after Tunstall was killed. Another newspaper that was easy to find with the story from the Mesilla Valley is the Las Vegas Gazette from April 6, 1878, page 4.

If it was Jesse Evans that was the one that actually shot Tunstall as some say, then this timing could possibly explain why the Regulators didn't go after him, because if he was still recovering at that Fort then they wouldn't have been able to get to him?, Im just trying to make sense of the why's and who's that was involved in Tunstall's killing, I wondered where Evans was at the time, and if he was involved? I wonder now how long he took to recover? , Thanks for searching that nmjames
