Actually I'd seen this photo many times and I understand it was sold in Dodge as a postcard souvenir on the back of which this person was identified as Billy The Kid. Wyatt Earp is in the photo and possibly Bat Masterson and Luke Short, but I don't think that's Billy. I believe it also identifies the man sitting to the camera's left as "Jesse James" but that's not Jesse either. These people have been identified by historians but I don't remember who they are. If I come across that again I'll post the info here.
I have the old postcard and emailed it to you. The person to his right, you can see his arm in this picture, is Billy Dixon of Adobe Walls. I have been told that all the people in the pictures were at Adobe Walls.
Thanks for sending the copy of the postcard. Do you think the person standing at the left side of the photo is Belle Starr? That's what I've been told in the past but thinking outside the box as I often try to do, I once proposed a theory that was met with considerable ridicule and possibly justifiably so. I theorized whether that person might not be a female but rather a young Billy The Kid dressed in a feminine looking shirt and that someone once identified it as such and overtime there was confusion as to which person was alleged to be Billy. I know, it's a bit far out and that does look like a female, but there are some facial traits that compare to Billy and since the photo is not very good resolution, it just might be within the realm of possibility. I'm sure my imagination just ran away with me on this one, but I'm wondering if you agree that's Belle Starr.
No I don't think the person is Belle Starr. I have read about Belle but have never found where she would have been around Billy Dixon. I have been told that the lady may be Hannah Olds. Her husband William Olds died and is buried at Adobe Walls. If I remember correctly, William fell off the top of a house and died from the fall. Hannah returned to Dodge City but not much is known about her. I have a book on Adobe Walls with pictures of some of the people that were there. Some on the postcard looks like the ones in the book but it would just be a guess.
I don't know why the postcard has Billy the Kid on it, but it may be because they wanted to sell postcards and back in the 40s or 50s not many people knew who Billy Dixon was. Just a guess.
The man they have as Jesse James is Billy Dixon. They may have Bat Masterson correct but that would be about the only one. If you really want to know, you might contact the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum in Canyon, TX.
The next time I go up to Canyon, I may take my old postcard and see if they can tell me who the other people are.
The other picture stated as the Capture of Billy the Kid, I feel is of the Hole in The Wall Gang. Butch and some of the boys.
yeah its the same guy 15 years and 20~ lbs later. its that jawline. beautiful horse he's riding there. if brushy's account is reliable, he certainly had opportunity to ride some of the best. these other photos posted after don't have btk in them. the 'las vegas 4' pic on true west we've already talked about at length here earlier. the 'bookwork' on wm henry roberts, at least in post btk times, appears to be substantial and validating, or at least clarifying, if the appropriate searches were to be done. one possible lead: the texas confederate widow's application (denied) from a mrs. j.h. roberts.. found in indexes. i can't remember if from carrolton or taylor but it would probably involve a trip to a specific library. i'd love to check it but im in orygun. could be a longshot but what if it was revealing, its astounding how much info can be contained in those apps sometimes...
