Paulita relates how Garrett asked why BTK was in Fort Sumner when he knew the answer. The question was for the benefit of Poe . Paulita did not know protecting her honour was the secret lie Garrett used to keep the Deputies quiet Garrett also had Coroner verdicts as well as Pete identifying BTK before he fired - to deflect responsibility away from himself The residents directly involved created their own cover story to protect themselves - that BTK was shot in the face with a shotgun and was unidentifiable! everybody knew Pat was a gambler - everyone stood to loose.

Im very curious! If Paulita Maxwell was willing to lie about Billy The Kid, and his whereabouts and what have you. Isn’t it possible that she lied about the original photo of The Kid? Maybe that not really him and some of these other photos we see are?

I believe Paulita could not lie as it would be beneath her dignity...her story could be seen as rather contrived in regard to Billy's death as indeed it had been. But she volunteered the allusion to Billy having a child born in Fort Sumner and that the young girl lived to a certain age - 40 years after the fact she was saying as much of the truth as she could without betraying those who would survive her by many years more.If what Paulita said is true - DNA could prove or disprove Brushy Bill fathered Billy's child...

There is one way to prove something with DNA .... Oliver Roberts.... aka Brushy.... he was either Oliver or Somebody else....test his DNA against Olivers mother....maybe he is her son but maybe not

Paulita's eye witness account of BTK's first appearance in Fort Sumner was at odds with the murderous reputation that preceded him from the Licoln County War. BTK stepped into the street to gather in one of his men who was threatening to shoot a drunk young resident that Paulita's mother was trying to protect..the incident may not have been as dramatic as the shooting of Joe Grant accross the street but gave greater insight into the character and social consciousness of BTK which won him many friends...

Sources or footnotes for this?

Hi Elwood...the Noble-Burns interview 1926 at her home in New Fort Sumner -almost entirely in the first person as if it were a recording(at her insistence). The Regulator BTK removed from the street was Chevez...the drunk young Mexican was Paulita's future brother-in-law who would eventually die young and after who Paulita named her son...it is possible the photo in her album said to be her son could be this man.Despite their deep gratitude to BTK on the day...the Maxwell copy of the tin type taken nearby -never made it into Paulita's cherished album...

leeb,
Maybe you can explain what that is and why you think so?

Thanks to Paulita we know where when and how the tin type of BTK was taken...and we know it was not -in her opinion -a good likeness. We know from her that their image given to Deluvina by BTK -was destroyed in a house fire...we know nothing about the images reproduced in Garrett's book and by a journal. We do know only the Dedrick portion of the four survives thanks to their devotion to his memory through many past generations.

Ok... after reading her brief interview and other brushy/billy books, I've arrived to a very captivating theory that's absolutely plausible. What's everyone hiding? Even brushy? What stands out to me is what she says about the original photo... lost and burned but copied? I've always been convinced that the man in the famous tin type is brushy- the resemblance is exact- BUT it sounds like it's not Billy. Maybe brushys likeness was used due to the original disappearing and them needing an image to market and validate the claims and legend. Makes a lot of sense if ya ask me.
